I am doing a present cake, and for some reason, am nervous about how the fondant is going to go on the cake. I have covered it seems everything imagable with fondant....round, long, odd shapes. But never anything square! Is it hard? How do you suggest doing the smoothing? I just keep imaging the corners all getting wrinkly. I thought about cutting out squares and covering each side, but I don't want seams.
Any hints?
I just did a purse cake in my gallery last night. I used a piece of vinyl(extra piece of pool liner) rolled out the fondant and kept it on the vinyl and transfered to the cake...didn't have much to smooth. Then I used a paint trim guide which has a metal blade and cut straight down into the fondant. my first edge was not that perfect but the other 3 are. Sorry I'm not that good explaining but I think doing a square is easier than a round cake.
Yep, square is easier for some reason. Just make sure that you begin your smoothing at the corners. My very first fondant cake was a "present" shaped cake and it was no problem. P.S. Don't pull the fondant at the corners even though this seems like the natural thing to do; you more or less press at the corners if this makes sense. Good luck!
