I am getting my figurines ready for my fireman cake and I made some boots out of rolled fondant. I left them out to air dry and they are cracking left and right - it is drying up like play-doh left out!@!! Did I do something wrong....???????? They were looking so cute and then now - they are drying out.... Also how do you get a smooth finish to your fondant sculptors???? Also, when do you usually start making your fondant sculptors????

Can you tell that I have never dealt with fondant before in my life????? Help????

Thank you Cake Central!!!!

I do not know the type of fondant you are using but basically I would have made 50/50 gumpase/fondant it is more durable and the shen is done by just rubbing the pieces with your hand.

It must be too dry... I usualy had a little bit of crisco to soften up my fondant and this works well.... make sure that you knead it well also ...this warms it up and make it pliable again ...and smooths easier.....

I am not sure what kind of fondant I am using, either!!??? The mother and daughter team that I train from - gave me the fondant in a ziploc bag - I know that they don't make it themselves, but who they order it from - I have no idea.

Rubbing it in crisco???? Do I do that as I am modeling it - or once it is modeled get a q-tip or brush - and brush it with crisco - to give it a smooth finish????

I made a helmet, ladder, and hose last night - they turned out cute, but look more like something made from play-doh than these flawless works of art - LOL!!!! Maybe I am setting my expectations to high - since this is my first time working with fondant.

Thank you all for your help - how do I take a picture so that I can show you, all what it looks like so far??? I do have a digitial camera - is that what I use???

Everyone have a happy Wednesday!!
