Does anyone have any ideas for a Willy Wonka cake?

This is for a customer who ordered it for her granddaughter's 5th birthday this next weekend.
She wants it to represent the new movie, which I guess is called, "Charlie and the Chocolate Factory" but I haven't seen this new movie.

I thought about an edible image, but I don't know where I can get one on such short notice and I believe because of copyright laws, a local bakery won't print one for me.

I am just plain stuck. Please share any and all ideas you might have for this cake.

Thanks so much!

HI,

I've seen the movie (and red the book 5 times I guess). In the story there is a "chocolate river hall". Maybe you can do something with that? It contains green grass, a chocolate river, some red/white candy trees (comparable with the ones you see on christmas trees) and a limonade fountain. The grass is placed higher than the river - so you got steep cliffs that are brown.
By the look of youre photos you're very good at creating cakes - so maybe you could use some MMF to make the little "oompa loompa's". (icon_redface.gif don't know what the word for these little men in english is - sorry for that).
If you're looking for a picture of what I mean, it's like the front of the gameboy game: http://images-eu.amazon.com/images/P/B0009EPYXA.02.LZZZZZZZ.jpg or on http://chocolatefactorymovie.warnerbros.com/img/photos/fullsize/photo13.jpg . Does this help?

I think you should make a chocolate cake with the edible grass around in places, etc. And, maybe put gumdrops all around or something to symbolize all of the candy that he makes. It's just lying around everywhere growing off of trees & bushes, etc. The children get to walk through this part of the factory...there's even a chocolate river and a waterfall...don't really know how you'd make that, but....good luck! I'd love to see the results!!!

the first thing I thought of too was the chocoalte river and the waterfall. If you have the wondermold pan bake that and place it on a sheet cake to make the waterfall and have the river flow onto the sheetcake. I think chocolate ganache would work great for the waterfall because it will flow down the cake and set up and still look shiny. And then around the river have grass and all the fun candy trees and bushes. YOu can use ice cream cones and atttach candies to them. I think it would be way cool. Good luck.

Hmmmm. Well these are definitely great ideas and the pictures really help. At least I can start to get an idea of what to do.

I heard the the "Oomap Loompa's" looked different in the new movie. Is this true? I would rather not have to rent the movie to find out.

More ideas and pictures would be GREATLY appreciated!

If you've seen the movie case or preview or anything....is there a website to this movie???? I'll have to find out.

Anyway, the oompa loompas are very short...they don't have the crazy hair that the original ones did. It's just one man, sothey all look alike. But, they're still orange.

I'd go traditional...I loved the original with Gene Wilder. Besides, the new version is dark and not as fun. Remember the everlasting gobstopper or the geese that lay the golden eggs? How about a cake themed on 'you can even eat the dishes'. In cake design, I would work off the scene where they first enter the garden. Butter'cups' that were like daffodils with cups as centers, mushrooms with red caps and creamy dots and of course a fudge river and waterfall ( use the wondermold mini to make the back of the fall).

This sounds like a great cake to have fun with. Let your imagination flow and remember it is about a sweet fantasy and it will be charming!

Can't wait to see your rendition!

If you've seen the pictures I posted - that's the new guy - it actually is only one person - They are different than 20 years ago (but hey - I am too icon_wink.gif) The most important thing about oompa loompa's are their red pointing hat and their red suit. And I think a chocolate ganache chocolate river would be great! And for extra, you could add some multicolour candy balls in the grass.

Actually I couldn't open up the first link for some reason, so I guess I couldn't see the oompa loompas. I think it's just a problem with my computer for some reason.

Okay. So I like the idea of the chocolate river and the candy forest. I think I will try making Oompa Loompas out of MMF and hopefully they can dry all the way through.

I appreciate all the help. Keep the ideas coming if you think of more. Thanks!

I really like the chocolate river, what about the girl that turns into a blueberry? You could mold a big blueberry and put a small head on top and just feet at the bottom, and with wire or anything to have her suspended above the cake like she was floating away. The grass scene in the movie was a big deal (it was in all the previews) so you could do that with the chocolate river, and have gumdrops as bushes, chocolate dipped pretzels rods as trees with icing leaves maybe some small candies on them to look like fruit (and to get some more bright colors on the cake too) You could use the small suckers that are all colors together and make trees too. Runts have those candies that are shaped like bananas, you could use that on the trees too. You could make a bridge out of graham crackers (I would coat them in chocolate, any color with the cany melts) and have it over the chocolate river, you could break the thin pretzels and dip them in chocolate to make the railing. They even have the Wonka candy now that you can use too. With Easter arould now you can use jelly beans, the chocolate eggs with the yellow and white cream in them(crack one open and let the cream ooze out, that could represent the geese with the golden eggs)
I hope these ideas help I am full of ideas late at night, that is why I can't seem to get to sleep at a decent hour :0) Good Luck!!

I am thinking of something simpler - like a 3-D top hat which is decorated with candy.

I also thought of a top hat! Maybe you could make an upsidedown top hat in purple (like the Wonka brand) and fill the top with lollies. the little ones would love it and it would not be too hard to make.

if you have one of these charachter pans, these ideas might help. the scarecrow pan or a doll pan of sorts and and make a big oompa-loompa and write willy wonka - or something to the sorts on the sides - you might try going to a local grocery that does cakes and see if they have any sugar pics. who knows you might get lucky. Goodluck and hope this helps -Diana

If I were to do the upside down 3-D Wonka hat, what would you recommend for the rim of the hat? It would obviously need to be sturdy but not too top heavy.

More cake? MMF? Hmmm?

Any ideas?

I would use modeling paste. You would make the rim a day or two in advance so it sets hard. then just put in on top of your stacked round cakes.

You could also use coloured white chocolate. Lightly cover a dinner plate in vegetable oil and smooth the melted chocolate over the plate. once set turn the dinner plate over and wipe the plate with a hot towel. The vegetable oil will melt a bit and the chocolate should come away from the plate leaving you with a nice smooth edible rim.

Hope this helps

Hi everybody!
I just posted the finished cake to my photos. Thanks so much for all your help in giving me ideas for this cake. I personally wanted to do the 3-d top hat idea, but this is what the customer wanted.

Her husband came and picked up the cake this morning and then she called about 30 minutes later going on and on about how much she and her family, especially the little girl loved the cake. They say that they have never seen anything like it before, and she said that she would call me whenever she needed any other cakes. They even paid me an extra $5!

I was just excited.

Again, thanks so much!!

I loved the new movie. How about doing Johnny depp's big hat in the movie. That would be really cool. Or, Charlie has a run-down tilting house it would be really awesome. You could try to replicate the look of the factory. I would love to do a willy wonka cake. Yeah.
