I'm in the process of researching airbrushes since I just ordered my compressor. I've never used one and always wanted to try one for whatever hobby I was entrenched at the time (nails, painting on canvas, t-shirts, etc. Yes, I know with the cake decorating it becomes a dedicated airbrush.) icon_smile.gif

I was leaning toward the Aztec (looking at two models. Don't remember them off hand at the moment). Has anyone used these? If so, what's your opinion on them? Can you compare them to others?

Also, please tell me your favorite airbrush and why you like it so much. Thanks in advance.

I have used the Kopy Kake and Paasche. I prefer the Paasche. The KK is good for general coloring, especially large areas. The Paasche feels like it gives me more control, it allows for better detail work, and was a very good deal money wise. I got the Paasche VSR90 from dixieart for $65 shipped. It came with a case, hose, extra needle for larger spray pattern, hanger, and 2 color cups. Most gravity feed brushes will have a attached cup, and must be cleaned prior to usinganother color, and is limited to the amount f color it will hold. The paasche cups detach and come in 2 sizes so it can hold more color. Very few brushes come with the extras. You will have to buy a hose $20, you are limited to spray pattern with the needle that comes with it unless you buy another. The extra needle with the Paasche is the standard for most other brushes. The needle in the brush is for fine detail. If you bought a KK compressor, unless you bought an Airmaster Plus you will only be able to use KK brushes, unless you change out the fitting.

Thanks so much for answering, cigarHerb. It's funny but after doing a lot of research on this topic I went and ordered the Paasche VSR90 from dixieart as you advised on so many posts. You were correct. That was the best deal I could find - and I've spent hours over the last few days looking.

So I ordered the compressor from Harbor Freight and the Paasche from Dixieart. You just mentioned the hose and the other needle. I was under the impression that these items came with the airbrush. Here is what I ordered: http://dixieart.com/Paasche_V_VJR_VSR90.html

Finally, I wanted to ask (you probably already answered this, but I can't recall and if you did, don't remember which one) which edible "paint" do you prefer using and why.

Thanks so much for all your help and information. I've always wanted to try an airbrush but never did, so now I'm finally getting one and I'm so excited.

I use Americolor, it has a good consistency, it sprays well, it is not to thin, and not too thick. When it is thinned it does not have a watery or transparent look to it. Several of the colors, Wilton for example, look very watery even when they are not thinned. You have to make several passes with them to get good color consistency. The Americolors also seem to atomize well in the brush and I do not have much of a problem with splotching.

Yes the hose and needle come with the airbrush. If you had ordered a Kopy Kake, or Badger, etc. you would have to get them separate.

Thanks again. That's the brand that I hear about most so I've been checking around for pricing. Any tips? I think the best price I've seen so far is at the Cakes by Sam site (hope that's the right name. I'm so forgetful lately).

I hate to say it but I dont shop around for colors. We get them from Earlene. She carries the Americolors and just lives afew minutes away.

My only tip for you is, if you are new to airbrushing go to howtoairbrush.com. They have some free basic lesson you can follow on the web to help get you started. Use some cheap food colors to practice with.

Thanks so much for this thead! I'm hinting very strongly to my boyfriend about an airbrush for Christmas, so I'll definitely be passing along this info to him!

Question - are airbrushes left/right-handed? I'm a lefty, so it's always something I think about. Seems like I've seen a lefty airbrush out there, but not too many.

airbrushes work for either hand. Everything is centered.

Thanks for the great link herb! I don't have an airbrush yet but looking at that page gives me hope that I might just be able to get good at it when I do get one!
