I've certainly gained info from this to include in my contract, thanks all!

Same here, they even specifically mentioned a sheet cake. A "tight budget" is subjective as well, there should be some workable options around the $100 price point.

Sheet cake is fast becoming one of those things I don't want to hear.

I don't do them. I Have a $100 minimum, so when people say they "just want a sheet cake" i tell them that and they don't want to talk to me anymore.

So last night I email her asking if she wanted a "sheet" cake with a ship/pirate theme drawn on it or an actual sculpted pirate ship. And asked her budget. She replied "Oh yes! That's what I meant. A sculpted cake. He wants a big ship for his party. Our budget is only 50$. Will you be able to do that? Thanks!"

Call me a simpleton but this sounds cute.

If I was drinking coffee, it would be all over my s3's screen right now.

I'd seriously tell someone to do that. If I couldn't do it for their budget and I knew that they couldn't spend much that would be the cheapest option. I have no problems telling someone cheaper options if they can't afford something super fancy.

but it sounds like the client in this case has an incorrect idea of what's reasonable, budget-wise!

This is my "favorite". My family does this to me all the time! I'm just a student but I am also trying to develop & establish myself. Ugh!

LOL. I don't do them either, heck, I don't even have a sheet pan. I have it written on my website that I don't offer them yet people keep asking.
Edit: I made the 1000th post in this thread. Woohoo!

Yea I have given customers ideas to buy plastic figurines for cakes if they didn't have the budget for gumpaste ones.-using their money for more cake rather than a figurine.  This lady was taken back when I told her how much an actual sculpted pirate ship was gonna cost! needless to say I will not be doing a Pirate ship cake anytime soon--

Maybe she is making poke cake. My mom always used to make those in the 70s.

You guys really made me laugh!

Here's a good one: a friend of mine who owns a kinder garden called me saying she was thinking on giving in the mothers say festival some nice cupcakes with flowers... So she was looking in the Internet (a website similar to eBay) and she found some cupcakes that costs 80 cents each... But then all of a sudden she reminded that I did backers as well and you know as a friend I want to buy your cupcakes... At the same price I found in the internet!
My God I could not not laugh! My answer was: go ahead "friend" and buy those super cheap cupcakes for your Mother's Day festival! Just to remind you god knows what those cupcakes are made of...
