I have one of those wilton fondant mats and hate it. What does everyone else use to roll out their fondant? And there are times i need it very large.
I HATE that Wilton mat - it is garbage. I have a large silicone mat from Global Sugar Art - well worth the $40 investment! http://www.globalsugarart.com/search.php?search=20785
I have one of those wilton fondant mats and I hate it too. I bought one of the blue silicone mats, I think it's made by Ateco. It's awesome!
I use THE MAT from Sweetwise. It was well worth the purchase. I have that Wilton Mat. I do use it for measurments but I don't use it for any real work. It was a big waste of money.
I also have the blue Ateco mat. I use it a lot for little cutouts to keep them from drying out.
I bought thick and clear vinyl from the fabric store. It's nice and wide, costed $5-$7 for a yard, maybe even less than that. When I am finished I clean it off, roll it up and store it in a PVC pipe to keep it from becoming damaged. This works great for me.
I have a pampered chef silicone mat. I even rolled out marshmallow rolled buttercream on it with a little bit of powdered sugar (more sticky than fondant), and it didn't stick at all.
I roll it out on the counter, pick it up and put it on the cake.
Yep, me too!

I second that I purchased well over a metre from my local hardware.. FANTASTIC.. and only cost $4.50 and I got two big long mats. I rolled my fondant out for my first wedding cake this weekend just gone (fondx) and I picked up the mat and lay it over the tier and peeled off the vinyl.. worked a treat
I even cut off some the other day and ran it through the cricut and made a scroll stencil to use with royal icing.. also worked a treat!
I have this huge ceramic tile that I use for rolling out. It gives me a nice work area.
I use The Mat from Sweetwise. I was concerned about too much damage from constantly wiping my granite counter top. I cannot afford to put a second counter top down, so I found something I can use and protect my counter at the same time.
The silicone mat is also a good choice.
i use (and love!) the fondant work mat by fat daddios. its big and nothing ever sticks! also you can use the promo code cakecentral on this website and get 10% off.

i read about using the plastic from craft stores and i think i want to try it for making a smaller mat. thanks for all the advice!
I also have all 3 of these mats, and have a terrible time storing them ! especially the mat by sweetwise! i can never get it to roll small enough to stuff back in the tube and then i get crinkles in it if i put it anywhere tilted or uneven???
