See the pretty 14" dark fudge cake below? What you don't know is that it's my first "biggie" - I spent three nights making chocolate shavings and curls, then two nights baking it. I began icing it last night after my little one went to bed. 2 full batches of chocolate icing later, I realized my new icing recipe is for crusting buttercream, and I needed non crusting so I could comb the sides. I made another batch of buttercream, and thank heavens I already had butter melted and at room temperature!! I got it frosted, topped with chocolate, shelled, photoed, and boxed up, and finally crawled into bed at 1:30, just 3 1/2 hours later than usual.

When I got to work this morning to hand the cake off, my co-worker says to me.....

But the wedding is NEXT weekend!!

Moral of the story: Don't try a new icing recipe on a huge cake right off the bat, and for heavens sakes, double check the dates on your calendar!!

Moral of the story, part 2: if you do something boneheaded like this, send an email to the office and invite them to share in your boo boo. You'll have an office full of new best friends! icon_smile.gif

Yum! I'll take a slice! Sounds like something I'd do... Actually my biggest fear is that I'll have the wrong date, but miss the event!

I would have told her this was the practice run & you just wanted her to see how talented you are!

The cake looks great - I'm sure it tasted great too!

...and I thought I was the only one to ever bake and decorate a cake a week ahead of the actual due date.. icon_surprised.gificon_cry.gificon_lol.gif I don't have an office to go to.. so I called a friend and asked if her office would like a treat. When I explained my dilemma, I thought she would never stop laughing. Lesson learned CHECK THOSE DATES!! icon_rolleyes.gif

When I first started reading your post, my draw dropped. I felt so bad, all of that work you did. (It's something I would probably do too icon_redface.gificon_confused.gif ) When I read the moral of the story, part 2, it brought a smile to my face. Good for you, being able to roll with what life throws at you! Things tend to happen for a reason. Who knows, maybe that "practice" cake will bring you lots of other orders!

Great looking cake, and love the story. Hearing others 'oops' just make it easier to roll with mine!

My shoulders just sag for you knowing all the hard work you went to, and the satisfaction of having it DONE, only to realize now that you have to do it all over again! Sorry that happened!!!

But hey, look at the bright side, at least you were early for the wedding and not a week late!!! Now THAT would have been a disaster! icon_eek.gif

WOW, We must be related or something. I thought I was the only one to do things like that! Well, at least we can laugh at ourselves. Sure would like a piece of that cake.
