Hello everyone. I wasn't sure if I needed to do an intro or not and didn't know where to put one if I did so I thought I'd post here. I'm from Alberta Canada and I've been making cakes for about 6 years or so now. I just decided to try my hand at making them from home to sell to people. I was just making them for my son. I use to work at a specialty cake store but quit there after I had my son.

I've been reading a little bit on the board and have found some great ideas from you guys. I just recently bought a box of Wilton Buttercream icing to try out (I usually make my own but find it tends to stain the cake board so I thought I'd try something new) and then I read that you guys didn't think it was very good tasting. I'm hoping it'll taste okay but if not, I guess I go back to my recipe.

I look forward to posting some cake idea with all of you and getting some great info icon_biggrin.gif

hello and welcome!!!!
i think all icing stains the cake board....thats why i cover my cake board with aluminum foil. some people use freezer paper too.
go back to your recipe...its cheaper!
so, you worked in a cake specialty store???? you know we will all be expecting wonderful tips and advice from you!
welcome

Thanks for the welcome everyone. At the bakery I use to work at, their board never stained...even when I used my recipe on it so I don't know if it was the type of cake board they had there or what but the boards I bought from a crafting store suck. They leave huge oil stains on them. I totally agree about making the icing is way cheaper than to buy. The recipe I have is just the basic buttercream icing. I think I've seen it posted on here.

1/2 cup shortening
1/2 cup butter or margarine
1 tsp of clear vanilla
3 - 4 cups confectioners' sugar
2 tbs of milk

I'm so excited to be a member here. I get to chat with others about my most favorite thing to do icon_biggrin.gif

Lol, that one is hilarious. I haven't seen their shows in ages. I'd like to watch them again. I've heard there's a movie coming out. I can't wait to see it.

I think Dawn's recipe uses more butter.

Oh really, I got it out of a recipe book that I had. The stuff I bought comes in a box and then you add butter and milk to it.

Hi FruitLoop- welcome to cakecentral.com
I love Wallace and Grommit, too. I wish they had more episodes available overseas...oh well.
I would not be surprised that the boards that you had at the cake shop were way different then what you ended up buying at the craft store, they were probably more grease resistant.

Welcome to our family!! I love your beer bottle cake--too cute! I'm thinking about making something like that for my dh for his bday--of course, it'll have to be a Creemore Springs or Upper Canada bottle--but the idea is there.

Again--welcome!
