As far as cooking with 3D pans I tried the ball which clips shut and that failed 3 x it looks like the wilton teddy pan has the same principal hows any one cooked the entire shape in one. Plus then to make the cake tasty it is nice to tort it for flavours otherwise I'll stick to a flat drawing.

My wilton ball pan is supposed to be cooked in two halves, then put together with icing. I have done a 3d lamb mold which was baked as one solid cake. I didn't seem to have any problems with it. Did you try to make your ball as two seperate cakes? Are you thinking of trying the 3d bear?

Yes my ball pan shuts with an air hole at the top and apparently you rotate it mid way but after 3 attempst I gave up yes I was thinking of the teddy bear for stitch that rat thing is it, a little apprehensive I followed the guide lines that came with the tin and the suggested receipe. Disastrous.

The only problem I have w/the 3D cake pans is making sure I put enough batter in. Sometimes, it does not rise enough and there's a space there. I had that happen with the train cake that is my avitar, but I was able to cover the problem with frosting. I've done the little 3D bear, and that turns out fine if you have enough batter in there. My ball pan is done as two pcs then put together as well. I find, especially with the larger ones (the pans that require the use of a heating core) it helps to turn down the temp on the oven about 25 degrees and just cook it longer.

When I use the 3D cake pans, I use the Wilton's Cake Release and bake an extra 20 minutes.

To check for doneness, I use my long knife and push it all the way to the bottom.

I've just purchased the 3D stand up bear (not the mini) and will let you know how I fare.

My question is... which cake recipe to use? My plan is to use the recipe below (apparently it's good for 3d cakes), but substitute the yellow or white cake mix with DH's Swiss Chocolate/Devil's Food cake mix.

1 Duncan Hines Yellow (or White) cake mix
4 egg whites
1/2 cup water
1/3 cup vegetable oil
1 small pkg of instant vanilla pudding mix
1 cup sour cream

Does that sound like a good plan?
