Sorry to say, yes the pot is real. Since I only needed enough cake for 7 people I didn't put any in the pot. The spines are made from Royal icing. I spent some time (while watching Desperate Housewives) piping out 1" needles with tip 3. I recommend that if you do this to make extra needle since they're so fragile. I ran out so I had to break some in half..which worked out nicely.
