Sorry to say, yes the pot is real. Since I only needed enough cake for 7 people I didn't put any in the pot. The spines are made from Royal icing. I spent some time (while watching Desperate Housewives) piping out 1" needles with tip 3. I recommend that if you do this to make extra needle since they're so fragile. I ran out so I had to break some in half..which worked out nicely.

I used a mini version of this in the desert (along with a lizard)for my 2nd cake in my Wilton class. Thanks for passing along such a neat idea.

Wow! This cake is really nice! I have been looking at all the catus cakes online and I think this one is the best! I was wondering though how you make the flower, what with? and what is the stuff in the middle of the flower? I just love this one, your pot is sooo perfect for it!
