Jewelry Box

Practice cake. I sure learned a lot and now know what I need to do to make this correctly since the box part isn't even matched up to the stand I made. I was trying to do a ring box but it turned into a jewelry box instead. Cake stand is constructed from wood. Everything is fondant. Box painted with pearl luster dust. Pearl necklace, earrings and ring painted with pearl and gold dust. Box trim cut from a mold. Heart latch, loop and tassel were hand made and painted with gold dust too.

The lid is cake but it's standing up like that because it's sitting on the base I made for it which is hinged to the bottom part. You can see the gap between the cake and the wood on the lid. ( that's where I have to improve most)

this cake is fantastic. I am trieing to figure out how the lid holds up like that? this cake must have been really hard to make.

Okay, I just LOVE this cake. I'm feeling embarrassed, but I still don't understand how the lid is supported--are you saying the under side of the lid is a wood board? I don't get how you got it to stay up at that angle--all the other cakes I've seen like this are open just a little and the dowels are hidden by flowers or something--I love this look--just can't figure out the magic of how you did it!

Oh thank you Jamie! I'm actually a bit embarrassed to share this one because it was a practice cake and there are so many visible flaws. The wooden base is an upside down "L" shape so the bottom of the cake sits on the bottom long part of the "L" and the lid sits on the short part of the "L". The short part is hinged so it tilts inward.
