I have an order for Fri. for a friend at work who's daughter is turning 16, which also happens to be the 1st day of school (ever) for my 5 yr. old! I am crunched for time, my boss (and the only other cake decorator to do any orders) has been on vacation for the past week, and I have had little to no time.
Now, normally, that would be fine.... not really that big a deal to do one cake during the week, but the pick up day is the same day as my daughter's first day of school! And I have a lot to do to help her get ready yet, plus make sure everything is ready for her (believe me, I am the far more nervous one)! Not to mention, this is a more complicated cake too. It's going to be a 3-D car (I'm using the cruiser pan), with her and a boy (which I plan to do in MMF) and a little grey cat hanging on for dear life off the back (also MMF).
I wanted to know what of cake her daughter might want, so I made her 3 different sample cakes, and 2 different frostings and 2 different fillings for her to try with them because she had mentioned her daughter likes lemon cake. So I had made her a key lime cake, lemon-lime cake and a lemon pound cake for her to take home for her daughter to try! She tells me in the end that her daughter decided she wanted..... Chocolate Almond! I know I'm whining here but I demand a hug, a cookie.... and a shrubbery!
Sounds like you are really stressing over your daughter's first day of school. I would be too. So, here's your hug {{{calejo}}} Now go get your cookie!
Well, on the upside she did like my cakes.... She was thinking about the chocolate almond, however, she told me her daughter was thinking about that one before she even took them home, but after I had already done them and brought them to work
not only do you get a hug you need a you go girl. take a deep breath. you did good by baking and giving samples because they will tell someone else and that will make your business grow. don't forget your cookie and get your self something to drink
First of all... ::HUG!:: second of all... can I just say that I officially love you for your shrubbery comment. A Python reference in an unexpected place... you just made my day.
okay, waaaaay to much work for one cake order!!!!! next time do NOT make so many samples....i actually dont make any samples for a birthday cake. now breath in, breath out.....eat a cookie and relax!

Consider yourself HUGGED on this end, and I hope your daughter has a great first day of school
BIG squeeze bear hug from me (Grrrrrr - shake, shake, shake - Grrrrrr) - my 5 year old loves them too. I know how your feeling about the 1st day of school anxiety - Feeling torn in 2 directions. Take a deep breath, count to 10 (with your little one to practice for school ) and do the best you can. Get as much done ahead of time on the cake - remember - they stay fresh once iced so make it ahead of time and devote your childs first day to her if you can. If you can't - it'll still be a special day. Remember to take pictures. Put your little one next to something that you can take a picture of them each year with to see their growing up progress. You'll do fine all the way around.
HUGS!!
Good luck...just relax, I am sure that your abilities as a mother and a decorator are more in tune than you give yourself credit for. Everything will go smoothly.
Try to remember not to cry when you leave her at school, you can break down later after the cake has been picked up!
Good luck!!
I'm RTFLMAO on the Python comment...it totally brought a smile to my face...
I'm so sorry about all the hassle you've been put through, and I KNOW that when it's time for my boys to go to school it's not going to be a good day for ME..I'll be the one crying, standing out in front of the school with the cam-corder making a HUGE scene! I might have to go in and set at a desk if they'll let me LOL
I know I'm whining here but I demand a hug, a cookie.... and a shrubbery!
.... and Thee Shall have a Shrubbery!

The only reason I did so many was because she's a good friend of mine, also, I gave her half of each cake and saved the other half for my kids I also packed the frostings and filling seperate so they could mix and match their samples to figure out what they preferred. Otherwise, I agree with you.... too much work.
BIG squeeze bear hug from me (Grrrrrr - shake, shake, shake - Grrrrrr)
Can't breathe.... might... have... whiplash.... such... sharp claws....
Also, thank you for the shrubbery...
I agree with everyone on the cake. Just do your best, do as much as possible ahead of time and be there for your child because that is what is really important.
My son started kindergarten a couple of weeks ago. A few days before school started he asked, "Mommy, are you going to cry when you take me to school the first day?" I said that I didn't think so. He said, "Good, because that would be re-e-ally embarassing." 5 years old and he's already worried about MY behavior! I asked if he thought he would cry and he said that he was a little nervous but he thought he would be ok.
The first day turned out fine and yours will too. Find some other kindergarten moms that are standing in the hall looking lost and go have coffee and cry on each others shoulders.

Kudos to you for making a cake and having your daughter's first day of school!
Having it done the day before your customer will make it way easier on you....and it will still taste just fine
My son starts his first day this Thursday...I know I will be so proud of him... I don't think he's going to cry because he went to preschool last year with no problems and no separation anxiety...but I might have some separation anxiety
Big hugs to you, and BIG HUGS to all the mommies out there that have their kids starting their first day of school this year
Do you have room in this hugfest for one more? Things will be fine mom-she is a big girl now-have a 5 yr old that just started K-garden too so I understand! I think its harder on parents for them to start school because it does mean they are not little anymore and these years will fly by...hugs to both of you!!
BIG HUGS to you!!!!! Mine just went on Wednesday, I walked and left my 3 year old with my mother so I could cry on the way home, a neighbor who I had only waved to before was getting his mail saw me red faced and came out to hug me. The lady in the next house, who has two sons in college, came out and said "Don't cry now, save it for when they call from 1000 miles away saying that they forgot to pay tuition and need $5000 or they can't start classes!" By the time I got home I was laughing, and my daughter loved it.
I would go ahead and finish it the day ahead also. If you use bakery boxes, put that inside of a big plastic bag to insure it keeps fresh if you're worried. And enjoy the day!!!
Big hugs for Calejo! I can't believe you have a cake order on your daughter's 1st day ---- I was a wreck last week for the same reason --- I can't imagine trying to make a cake too!
I just have to say I'm cracking up not only for the Monty Python reference....but that so many others caught it....I guess we all have quite a bit in common!
So ---- I too must give you a shrubbery lol
okay, sorry what does shrubbery mean andwhat does RTFLMAO stand for?
I agree that you have aready put in way more work than necessary for your friend. I know you'll do fine with having the cake done and just the way she wants it, just from seeing how much time you put into assuring her happiness over the flavors.
As far as the first day of school, I'm getting that feeling back in my throat just by reading your posts. The hardest part was walking out without them. I have three girls, two are in school and one is still at home. Just remember to take it all in and you will not be alone. There's going to be a room full of mothers and/or fathers feeling the same way you do.
LOTS of hugs,
Rose
