She made a butter yellow cake (from scratch), with a chocolate cream cheese filling (tasted light and fluffy like a mousse), and a high-ratio white butter cream.

Vanilla Cake with Chocolate Fudge filling, Wilton class icing (which the consistency is a bit on the dry side...making it hard to pipe. I prefer the frozen buttercream technique to do something like this...but this is good to know.
So...I think I'll decorate my son's cake. Purchased an edible image from a vendor on amazon, bought a basic set and winged it.
