Death By Chocolate Volcano
This is my first attempt at 3D-cake modelling and my first time making and using MMF. The ideas for creating this cake came from everywhere online, and were inspired by many of the beautiful volcano cakes on this site. Thank you! Volcano: - One 9" round cake, one 7" round cake and a small one baked in ramekin, stacked. (I don't have a bundt pan.) - Chunks of cake are sliced off at the edges randomly and 'plastered' onto other parts using buttercream, to achieve the uneven, rocky mountain shape. - Cake is covered with chocolate ganache (whipped), and placed on cake board over a MMF base. Lava: - Made by colouring white chocolate ganache red and orange and heated to achieve its fluidity, then poured from top and allowed to trickle. Smoke: - A portion of cake from the top layer (ramekin-sized) was dug out and a small plastic cup (a shot glass would be safer, I guess) placed in it. This was to contain some dry ice that was to create the 'smoke' effect. However, it never happened because the dry ice I bought had melted before I could use it. :( Text: - MMF cutouts with royal icing accent. I personally thought this was quite easy to do, simply because it didn't have to look neat and even ... Messy = natural-looking! :)
