Wilton Fondant Course -- Final Cake -- Daisy And Ladybug Garden.
This was my final cake and I am pleased with the result. I had a little trouble with my blue MMF being a little dry. Cake and crumb coat are Betty crocker with apricot jam for filling -- I wanted to focus on the decoration. Cake and board are covered in MMF. All decorations are MMF except Daisies which are gum paste.

Oma's Birthday Cake
This is my first try at making I am Baker's rose cake (she gives a lovely tutorial on her blog). I a have seen so many beautiful ones posted recently and I had to make one! I had intended to tint the frosting yellow, but got too excited and started frosting the cake. I made a 2-egg cake and lemon filling from the Kate Aitkens cookbook. It is a dense cake flavoured with lemon zest and lemon extract. I would love to use this cake for strawberry shortcake. It is frosted with a flour frosting from food.com. I found this a wee bit salty, but the texture is gorgeous -- like cool whip or meringue, and not too sweet. I used butter instead of margarine in the frosting recipe. There was plenty of frosting to cover an 8 or 9 inch round layer cake, but there wasn't enough frosting to cover the entire cake in roses, so I just did the sides in roses. I made this cake for my mother-in-law's birthday. Due to illness and poor weather for a picnic we weren't able to get together with her on the weekend. I had my husband drop off the cake this morning so she can enjoy the cake with her card making group this afternoon.

Barbie Cake With Real Barbie
I did this January 2010 for my middle daughter's 4'th birthday. I did this before I took any classes, so I was using canned frosting and it was a bit too soft to pipe. My oldest daughter put some pink sugar sprinkles on her skirt so it sparkled like the bodice on the actual Barbie. I would use buttercream or fondant now. :) I always wanted one of these as a kid. They had one in a glass case on the bakery counter in the grocery store that I always admired. I was disappointed to find out that many of these cakes use a half-barbie pic inserted into the top. I decided to try my hand at inserting a whole Barbie. I used a bunt pan and two rounds of the same width. I used the humps from the two rounds to fill in around Barbie's waist.

Woody, Toy Story - Birthday Cake.
3D Woody from Toy Story sitting on the bed. This is my first time making a fondant character and I am very pleased with the results. I used a printout of a colouring page to get the proportions for the body parts. Cake base is covered in MMF and imprinted with wood texture. Bed is covered in MMF and headboard is made from MMF that was dried for a few days. Woody is also made of MMF. Details are painted onto Woody using gel paste mixed with alcohol.
