My friends' daughter requested Day of the Dead and mushrooms for her birthday cake! I finally figured out a way to incorporate the two without it looking bizarre. :) This is a dark chocolate cake with buttercream filling, buttercream flavored MMF, and buttercream piping. I handpainted the fondant accents using powdered food color and vodka.

This cake was for my niece's 14th birthday. Instead of just doing the same old Hello Kitty cake, I decided to incorporate scenes and characters from the Hello Kitty brand. Top layer is red velvet with vanilla creme filling; bottom layer is confetti sprinkles with vanilla creme filling. Covered in buttercream icing with mmf accents.
The precious little girl for whom this cake was made requested the flavor to be "fairy berry". Since our guess was as good as anybody's, I made the bottom layer a confetti cake and the top layer was strawberry. Iced in green buttercream and accented with homemade fondant, each piece of the cake was edible. The large toadstool was made with rice krispie treats and covered in buttercream and fondant.
I threw this cake together one afternoon as a Christmas gift for my neighbors. It is a devil's food cake with marshmallow fondant and buttercream. The penguins would look MUCH better if I spent more time on them, but I wanted to get this to them pretty quickly. :)
