Chinese New Year
Chinese and English script done in royal icing, dragon stenciled in royal icing as well. I made my own stencil for the dragon out of freezer paper. Next time I'll use something sturdier and hopefully get less smudging. Fortune cookies and chopsticks are gumpaste. Lo mein is fondant. The chinese food box is all fondant, the pagoda and lettering are painted on freehand.
Gumpaste dishes, rice cereal faucet and handles covered with fondant. Sponge and dish towel are also fondant.
I made this for my costume-birthday party. The ship and sails are gumpaste. I used toothpicks for the masts, but next time I think I would use skewers or maybe lollipop sticks, as the toothpicks were so short I had to stick two together with gumpaste to get the right height. The map is fondant painted with a food coloring gel/vodka mix.
Flower Basket Cake
This was for my final class of Wilton 2. The handle is gumpaste wrapped around wire. I had a lot of trouble getting the handle to stay in place - it keeps trying to pop out the sides of the cake. If anyone has tips on how to do that better I'd love to hear them!
I did this for a friend's birthday. I enlarged a picture of her horse and cut out a stencil to help me paint on the design.
The design, including the rainbow heart, was at the specific request of the 6 year old birthday boy. It was my first fondant cake, and a lot of fun. :)
First Carved Cake
Obviously I needed lots more frosting. Being my first carved cake, I really didn't know how much to plan for. I still don't!. And since I decided to do it on a whim that morning, ran out to buy the ingredients and had it ready to serve by dinner (carving while holding a baby on my hip!) I thought it turned out ok.
