Convertible Car Cake For Teen
Customer desired a cake for an employee who was about to get a convertible for her 18th birthday. She wanted a cake to serve 5-8 people for in-store celebration. I actually made 2 cakes and discarded the first that I had airbrushed with road & sky. It looked a bit masculine & juvenile. Moved the car (made of cake and covered w/fondant) to a more feminine base. Pink colored fondant. Since this was a 9" square - flower scale was important. The flowers were molded out of a slightly darker pink gum paste and attached in clusters around the sides of the cake. I used a star-tip to create the bottom border in white. Customer stated she was "more than pleased" with the cake. As I had brought it into her store I got some truly gratifying feedback on the detailing I had done on the car from several of the other employees. Truly makes it all worthwhile.

Artist Palette Cake
Cake requested was a marble cake with an artist theme. The gum paste paint tubes were made first and allowed to dry for 3 days. Strips of white gum paste were overlaid on the tubes for the stripe and the cap area. Caps were made for the tubes. The palette was made of fondant with chocolate powder kneaded in for edibility. The brush is entirely gum paste. I was delighted when the client thought I had purchased a paint brush & put it on top as a gift for her son. In 40 years of baking I had never made a marble cake before. I added liquid chocolate to make the flavor really rich and added extra vanilla to the white for a real contrast of flavors. While how it displays is important, for me the Taste is the priority.
