My First Fondant Cake Ever!!

This was my first and truly the most worthwhile on a cake ever! I had put 8 hours into it and i honestly think i did a great job for my first time. Except that when I stretched the fondant over the cake, it ripped quite easily. Can anyone give me some good advise on how I can put fondant on a cake a lot more smooth and easier? Its so hard to put the fondant on without creases

Vans Shoe Birthday Cake

I was supposed to buy a friend of mine red vans for his birthday last year but he ended up buying them himself. So this year I decided to make him a cake that was a red Vans Shoe! I made this cake with fondant! It was soooo hard because it kept breaking but I tried to melt it with shortening. Any ideas on how I can keep it from falling apart?
