Playing with the new modeling chocolate tricks I learned from Mike McCary and Lauren Kitchens in Austin. 8x5 inch white cake tier with vanilla buttercream, covered in modeling chocolate. Cut a circular lid for the top, let it firm up, then placed on the cake and covered the sides "bandage" style. All the figures were made from modeling chocolate which was way easier than gumpaste to sculpt with but got melty very fast.
This is the cake I entered in the Austin "That Takes the Cake" show reworked a bit for an event I had 2 weeks later. The concave tier was made from RKT, all others were styro. Each tile on every tier was cut to size, embossed with a linoleum stamp that I carved and painted with black food coloring before placing on the fondant covered tiers. It took me SO long and I ran out of time so the other details of the cake were not finished for the show. I still didn't get it the way I designed it...the scrolled birds and flowers are really too small but I did like how the banner turned out and my painting skills are getting better so overall I was happy with it. This was my first competition and I did not place but learned a ton about competing, not to mention doing mega-huge cakes and time management!
8x6 inch high tier with fondant covered "hat brim", sitting on a 10" tier. Bunny was RKT's and ears, paws, etc. were all gumpaste.
CC Killer choc cake covered in buttercream and fondant with gumpaste accents and bow. This was an 8" x 6 high tier (3, 2" layers).
Fun, fun, FUN!
Inspired by one of Rebecca Sutterby's baby shower cakes. Strawberry cake on 10" tier and CC "Killer choc cake" on 8" tier. Used australian ganache under Michele Foster's homemade white choc fondant. Decorations are fondant with added tylose and some Wilton gumpaste on parts of the train.
Cake carved from 2 8" round strawberry cakes. Ended up being about 8 long by 4 1/2 wide by 6 1/2 tall. Covered with homemade vanilla fondant with gumpaste and butter cream accents. Serves about 10-12.
Handpainting on fondant with americolor red and black gel coloring. Cake was based on a Debbie Brown cake from her Dream Wedding Cakes book. The painting took me about 4 hours and I ran out of time to make the topper...good thing my daughter didn't mind:)

These cakes, for twins girls turning 5, were based on the Quincenera cake from "Confetti Cakes for Kids". Tiaras and wands were made with 100% Satin Ice gum paste. Each cake was an 8" and 6" tier. Iced with SMBC and Michele Foster's white choc fondant.
Chocolate cake with chocolate SMBC and white chocolate fondant. Razorback is painted gumpaste. Thanks L_Collins for the great advice on tackling the razorback logo! I definitely need to practice a bit more but I'm pleased with my first attempt at painting:).

My version of Debbie Brown's Enchanted Tree. Made for a school Thanksgiving feast. I ran out of time to make all the creatures! The colors are really off in this. You can't tell that the grass is green and I need to photoshop the people out of the background:)
This cake was done for a dear friend's daughter who lost her mom to cancer a couple of months before. I wanted to do something really special for her and based this cake on Collete Peter's quilled cake. BC and MMF with gumpaste accents.
Carrot cake, of course, with cream cheese frosting. Fence and veggies are gumpaste.

Many tiered weding cake for some great friends. This was my first attempt at gumpaste flowers (tulips and freesia). I was so tired I forgot to get better pictures. The brides mother sent me this one:)
Wilton cupcake pan used for cupcake, set into a 10" square tier. Box lid is styrofoam covered in fondant. Bow, tissue paper and streamers are gumpaste. Base is styrofoam wrapped with giftwrap.

This is a cake I did for my grandmother's 75th birthday about 5 years ago. My sister and I made tons of gumpaste roses and dipped them in colored vodka. The effect was really cool! The colors were intense - just like her real roses. They were glossy and looked like glazed ceramic UNTIL they began to melt. Thank goodness we got them in place before damage had been done. Live and learn:)
