i had been brainstorming for a non-pink birthday cake, but nevertheless this cake was inspired by a barbie doll! marie-alecia, barbie's french friend in fashion fairytale, wears a dress with shades of shimmering blue, violet, and purple :)

single recipe chocolate fudge cake with white chocolate cream cheese frosting. ordered for a guy's 30th birthday by his younger sister. since the size was too small to make the face details of the watch, i simply printed out the face on photo paper and protected it with clear sticky film on both sides before cutting out. i knew they were going to try to "save" the watch part of the cake anyway :)

Pirate Treasure Map

for a boy's 7th birthday. order request for a red and black pirate cake featuring a treasure map but also to incorporate blue. this is the design that i came up with. single recipe chocolate fudge cake with chocolate fudge frosting (death by chocolate), covered and decorated with fondant. jolly roger, treasure chest, tricorn hat, and pirate ship are candles.

ordered for a guy's 35th birthday by his girlfriend. 1-recipe vanilla cake with chocolate fudge frosting inside. cake is all edible, including the controller made from rice krispy treats.

Violin

chocolate fudge cake with white chocolate cream cheese frosting. ordered for a lady violinist who's part of an orchestra. the best compliment was how her husband (also a musician) asked me if i play the violin as well, because he said i got the violin details really good. (genuine surprise on my part, wow! i just googled some violin images.) too bad i didn't get around to figuring out how to attach strings onto it.

Bible

for a boy's first holy communion. he saw a photo of a bible cake from here on cc with a chalice on top -- really lovely, which i of course could not possibly recreate (because it's beyond my powers :) ). i followed tips on how to make a book cake without the book pan from researching on the forums. the only thing i didn't figure out in advance was how the cake was going to be too thick since i used a small cake pan. but the kid loved it nevertheless and hugged me while thanking me for it! totally made getting cross-eyed while painting the page "lines" along the sides worth it! :)

bottom tier is chocolate fudge, top two tiers are vanilla cake. all filled with strawberry meringue buttercream, covered and decorated in fondant. disney fairies are plastic figures. i was so tired the night before my daughter's 6th birthday when i was making this, the frosting didn't set right (as can be seen in the photo, it doesn't look like it was frosted "tightly") but i couldn't care less any more. she and the guests loved it nonetheless. got some design ideas from here on cc, thanks!
