I made this cake for my 4-year-old niece, Natalie, who requested a birthday cake that looked like my dog. I'm proud of the cake .. but even more impressed that it survived a Thanksgiving Day flight from Illinois to Florida with no complications!
I made this jumbo vanilla cupcake swirled with buttercream for Martha Stewart's "Cutest Cupcake Contest." (I didn't win.) The rosebuds, leaves and nametag are made of fondant, and I used two different types of cupcake papers, finishing it off with a satin ribbon.
The client asked me to try and match the cake to the plate (at left) and include elements of painting, since the birthday party was being held at a paint-your-own-pottery store.
This is actually a fake cake (styrofoam rounds) I made to display at a charity auction. It raised $100, so I was really happy.
I made this somewhat on the fly for a charity auction. It's actually two cakes baked in a 3-D tree pan that I stood upright and held together with dowels. The arms are chocolate covered pretzel rods; his body is buttercream, but the rest is fondant.
This was my first attempt at figure modeling for cakes, and my niece wanted the Little Mermaid. My mom had already bought these candles ... so I kind of had to design around them. :)
The color scheme was somewhat inspired by the invitation (at right). His whiskers are made out of spaghetti painted with food coloring.
This is a 3-tiered sweet cream cake with vanilla creme filling and fresh strawberries.
Carrots were made by hand using colored fondant.
I created this cake for a friend's wedding. The script (in black) imitates the Titleist golf ball logo but says "Timsdabest" ... because the groom's name was Tim.
This was the first time I had ever decorated with fondant. It was also the first time I had ever created a tiered/stacked cake with dowel supports. The cake was donated for a raffle that raised money for a local charity.
Everything on this cake is edible except for the green polka-dot bow, which is actual ribbon. The whiskers are make of thin spaghetti that has been dyed with a food-coloring pen.
