Disaster Recovery!
I baked this while I was away for the weekend at Lake Tahoe (altitude 6500 feet). I'm not used to the high altitude cooking corrections. This was a disastrous crumbling mess, but my husband encouraged me to try to put it together with frosting. I had no idea it would work so well! Frosting really does cover a multitude of sins... Thanks to "ngerland" and to Martha Stewart for inspiration.

Batman Bct
My son's birthday cake. This BCT gave me some fits - mixing 3 shades of blue/gray to get enough contrast, but not too much.. The good news? It was the best TASTING cake I've ever made! Doctored devils food with chocolate chips, chocolate mousse filling and white chocolate frosting. Chocolate suicide!

Mom
I admit this was her b-day cake, but it seems to fit the theme. There's a story about the buttons - mom is a master seamstress and when I was a kid she could not stand to let me wear anything 'store bought' without at least changing the buttons. That's been a life theme for us - if nothing else works, at least try changing the buttons!

Mermaid Cake
This was for a co-worker's 6 year old "Little Mermaid" birthday party. This is the first cake I made for someone else - I just started cake decorating about 6 months ago and up to now it's been all practice. The small shells, starfish and pearls are handmade fondant painted with luster dust. The large shells are molded candy sitting on brown sugar sand. The treasure chest is graham crackers with chocolate basket weave. The seaweed is royal icing but everything else is buttercream. I had great fun!
