No what takes the cake is the fact that she just texted me telling me I can use the Jordache horse image since it's just a head. Really? REALLY???? This is all after I was saying how much time these cakes take, how I have no time- working full time at a job...Geesh.....

Yes, and if that Jordache horse head logo is a registered trademark, and they're fussy about enforcing it, you could end up with a horse's head in your bed.

"Absolutely, I would love to do a horse cake for your sister! The price for that cake would be $____ - How would you like to pay for that?"
3 years ago I called a local bakery inquiring about a birthday cake for my daughter's 14th birthday. I had just started getting into watching all the cake shows on TV and thought it would be really special to get a small tiered cake. So I asked the bakery about a small 2 tiered cake, "something basic that would only feed 8-10 people" . Obviously I had no idea about caking. The lovely lady on he phone was so nice, she said they didn't do anything that small and suggested that I call the grocery chains to see if they do mini cakes or to look at craft stores for mini cake pans. Bless her heart. Now that I know what I know about cake decorating I can just imagine what went through this lady's mind over the phone! Hmmm, maybe she put me on this thread 3 years ago!
I ended up doing lots of research and made my daughters birthday cake myself. WHOA!! Tons of work and tons of time! Did 3 tall tiers, purple, blue and white fondant with butterflies and pink fondant bow and trim. Obviously not the best cake, but I enjoyed every step of the way , I been hooked since then. Hobby baker for life!
Of course, instead of a horse's head cake, you could do a cake with another portion of the horse's anatomy.

If I'm invited to an event and they ask that I bring a cake I don't go. If they tell me everyone is bringing something if you want you can bring the dessert I tell them sure I'll bring something and I bring salad. And if I sold them the cake for the event I don't go because they expect me to be the one to cut and serve it.
Now I get fewer invitations to things I didn't really want to go to in the first place : )
I've said this before: when I provide a cake for the Leland Award festivities at the Printing Museum, it's so that (1) I can "own" a piece of the award, and share it with my fellow docents, and (2) I can gain experience with an edible printing vendor before I'm putting their work on my own birthday cake.
Nobody asks me to do it, but everybody seems to appreciate it, even if it is just a 9x13 sheet cake, served "family style" in-pan.
When I had a retail bakery everyone assumed I would bring a dessert to every party, meeting, or gathering. If it was a potluck, I was also expected to bring a meal-type item since I was "cheating" if I only brought a sweet dessert. It took me a year before I started declining all invitations.

Cause you just whip up those desserts effortlessly out of thin air.
I had 3 cake tastings scheduled for Saturday.
One bride texts me last week that she has decided her budget will only allow her to purchase cupcakes and that she is just going to get them at Costco. Whew!!!! Glad I didn't waste my time on her.
Yesterday, bride 2 calls and asks if she can reschedule and tells me that Sunday would work great for her. I tell her that Sunday is not good for me and that I have another tasting date in December. She doesn't want to wait until December to make her decision and asks if I do them at night and that M-T-Th are good for her after 7:00pm. I'm thinking this chick has some nerve and I tell her as politely as I can that I don't work nights either. She then proceeds to tell me that she just doesn't know what to do. She says her mother can come on Saturday, but she wants to pick out her own wedding cake. She goes on and on begging. I was starting to feel sorry for her when she let's it slip why she can't be there.......She's got tickets to a freaking ballgame!
Fortunately my business brain kicked in before I told her what I really thought. I agreed to do the tasting on Sunday for an additional fee.
Jumping on that she says, "Mommy will pay whatever you charge". I threw out a number that would make most people run for the hills. She dropped me off a check this morning.

. . .
And you find that disturbing why?
I don't go to ballgames myself, but I do go to a great many concerts throughout the year. There are some concerts for which I would "exercise subscriber privilege" and exchange the ticket, in the event of a time conflict (e.g., I once exchanged a ticket for organist Cameron Carpenter at Disney Hall, simply because it fell on Mothers Day, and I refuse to be away from my mother all evening that day), but if I were to, say, fall into tickets, at the last minute, for violinist Itzhak Perlman, or cellist Yo-Yo Ma, or flutist James Galway, or organist Pamela Decker, or singer Joan Morris (and her pianist/composer husband William Bolcom), then there are very few prior engagements I wouldn't break, in order to attend. And while I probably wouldn't reschedule my own wedding, I would reschedule a cake tasting, even for my own wedding cake, without a second thought.

Ah, but would you ask your hairdresser to come in on Sunday when the shop is closed to cut your hair so you could go to a concert? How about your mechanic, your doctor? Why do people assume because you do cakes that you are available 24-7?
It's not that I cared that she rescheduled. II offered her a date in December (which is only 3 weeks away) and she didn't want to wait. It's the fact that she asked me to work after hours to accommodate her.

I get this too sometimes. If a place is closed, I come when it's open. Somehow for whatever reason though I have couples expecting availability at any time, day or night. Don't get me wrong, I tell them when I have openings and I stand by it. If they don't like the times, they can either go somewhere else, or they can adjust their schedule. I don't care if they're tired and they just want to sleep in, I'm not available when I'm not available.
