ALast Holloween I received an email from an acquaintance she wanted to know if I would like to "provide" several Halloween cakes for her family gathering.
I wrote back asking if she meant "donate" and she said yes. Her feeling was that it would be great advertising as she would give out my business cards to her family.
This lady had never even ordered from me! And wanted me to give her free cake! Um No!

I will never understand what goes through people's heads.
I had a client contact me yesterday and ask for a cake to serve, in a half and half! Um, I don't make batter for 6, my measuring spoons aren't that small.
And yes, I could've done it if I had an order for chocolate, and one for white, but I don't. Oddly enough, I am only baking white cakes this week.
This might be too mean to do to your mother, but I once made up a bunch of icing for a decorating class that had about half a container of salt in it. The kids in the class had been sucking icing out of the bags and saying that they "couldn't resist," so the salt icing taught them real quick that yes, they could resist.
I bet a cake iced with salty icing would make the complainers shut up real fast if they got to switch back to normal icing.
Hahah! This reminded me of my grandma! My grandpa always used to salt his food before tasting and it would tick her off to no end. One night, she waaaaay over salted his food before dinner -- he salted as usual and took a huge bite -- I can still remember the look on his face! My grandma sat in her chair all proper and calm and just watched him choke down the rest of his meal -- he never used salt again!! Sorry if this was a little off topic, but it brought back good memories!

I will be a wonderful grandma, I suppose. My husband would always slather his steak in A-1 before tasting it and it ticked me off to end. I finally just asked him to taste the freaking meat first, and he did, and loved it. Now he will just go on and on how his steak is so wonderful, and flavorful and juicy that it doesn't need A-1 because it would just cover up the delicious flavor of the meat, and so on and on and on... last month, I made steak and he started in, and I finally rolled my eyes and told him to give it a rest. Have A-1 or don't, I don't care anymore, I just want some peace and quiet! (I had been up for 64 hours with just a small 3 hour nap in between)

hahaha..I would have to laugh straight out at that lady..what a crazy thing to ask of you. Sometimes I can't tell if people have incredible chutzpah or if they're just incredibly clueless.

On the salt/A1 issue: I've never used any kind of steak sauce, and I eat my hamburgers either completely plain, or with grilled onions, and/or a bit of salt and pepper, as needed. The true test of a steak or a hamburger (or any other kind of meat) is how it tastes completely plain.
Ever notice, BTW, that Alton Brown has "B2" steak sauce in the Good Eats refrigerator?
And on the woman who never gave you any paid business, yet wants you to donate cakes: some people don't realize that cakes are what put food on your table, and need a lesson in reality.

You should have told her sure...and tell her that there is about a $500 rush fee.j/k! How long does she think it takes to bake a cake? I mean, the cakes would probably be cool enough to ice around noon depending on when you started...
When I worked in the GS bakery, next day orders were not uncommon. But they still made me soo mad. You can only imagine how same day orders made me feel! Does your child really mean that little to you that you forget about their birthday coming up and you need a cake? (This is not directed at anyone but customers who I have dealt with who self admittedly have children for the money that they get...but let's not open that can of worms.)

I love A1 sauce! The only time I do not like it is on Filet Mignon at a restaurant. Otherwise, I love it! Everyone has different tastes, that's for sure!

AI don't sell my cakes, in fact I never accept a penny for them, but nobody has ever not offered to pay. I can't imagine the balls it takes to ask a virtual stranger for free cake.

Every time I feel "nice" and say yes to their "something simple" request I get burned. Bad.
Had a lady want a "something simple" cake for a Saturday and it was a Friday afternoon. I happened to have a sheet on hand so I said "sure, what would you like me to write on it?"
The response, "well, I'd like to call you to discuss design options. My daughter loves Ace of Cakes and I'd really like something over the top."
How the H%&& did "something simple" turn into "over the top" so fast?!!!
Needless to say, I shut that down real fast. She said she'd contact me again in fall for her son's bday. Um yeah, you go ahead and do that.
WOW. That's crazy. I had one contact me at 12:30 Saturday asking for one on Monday. At first I was open to it, I had another delivery at 5pm and thought I could shop and bake on Saturday, still take Sunday off and put it all together on Monday before class. Well, she didn't know what she wanted it to look like so she said, Let me look on Pinterest. 24 1/2 hours later I start getting photos and messages with details about the colors and design. 1PM SUNDAY!!! I said, I'm sorry, it's too late. What are ya' gonna do? Ya' know?

I work at a WM bakery. All I get is last minute orders and "Can I have a cake in an hour or 15 minutes?" My favorite is when they come in 10 minutes before I leave and want a cake an hour or two before I get there. -______-

Both of my grandchildren (brother/sister) have May birthdays. Around February, we start planning their special cake. They tell me their friends look forward to seeing what kind of cake their gramma makes every year. But yeah ..... parents only have a whole year to know their kid's birthday is coming up! (big sigh!!)
And for those who wanted a "simple" cake from me? I honest to God would hold up my hand in their face and say, "Stop right there. Let's define what YOU call 'simple'."

Ok did you send some strange telepathic vibes to my customers lol??? I opened my email this morning to one sent at 11.27pm last night asking me for a cake for today! Only a 3D xbox with a controller on top... but it's ok as she said "I will pay a little extra if possible".
Although funny story; one of the first cakes I ever made for a customer was for a fella who was desperate as he'd forgotten his girlfriends birthday the next day; so I worked late and made him something simple... now every flippin' year he calls me the day before her birthday "I forgot again!"; I've started keeping a wee 7" in the freezer ready for his March 13th call!! lol
How about having a wedding booked since Jan and find out on thursday after 4pm, that the wedding you've booked for the 28th (friday) is actually on the 29th (saturday)? I went back to our original emails and yes, she did ask for the 28th.....
