I know, right? He has been weaned for over 2 years, and is never weird in public, but has a fascination with women. We were at a gas station and his daddy was pumping gas, and the boy, 3 at the time pointed out a lady that got out to throw something away, she was matronly, heavy, with grey hair and a knee high bunched around her ankle and he got his crinkly smile and sparkly eyes, and said, "Mommy, pretty girl!" I bet that would've made her day! He flirts with every woman he sees, he gets shy, and hides behind me, and peeks out at them, then tries to give them his toys. He doesn't care if they are 4 - 99, thin - morbidly obese, and black-white and any shade in between. I have seen him flirt with some really questionable characters at Walmart and have later asked him if all girls are pretty, and he looks at me like I am stupid and says,"Yeah, mama!" He never reaches for their boobs, but points out cleavage to his father and me, lol.
Awwww! Equal opportunity huh? His place in politics is waiting for him. He sounds like the PERFECT candidate for office LOL.
I just got the most annoying response from a co-worker who has asked me to make her daughter a princess cake:
I am interested in the cake howeever not the doll cakes. I was hoping for something like pink and gold cake. just a fancy looking cake that represents like for an indian princess. I saw some pics on the web but couldn't copy and paste it here. I think they look like fondue cakes but I probably would want without fondue as that would be probably more of a specality cake.
I get that there are a lot of people that don't realize the time and effort that goes into making a cake but it's still a little hurtful, especially when the comment is from someone I know.....do they think I just whip these cakes out in a half hour?! I use buttercream using real butter on all my cakes and only use fondant for decorations. I actually find buttercream more time consuming than fondant so it's kind of frustrating when people think that a fondant cake is a 'specialty' cake and a buttercream one isnt! Here is Canada, butter is expensive so buttercream icing is much more expensive to make than fondant. Anyway, I just wanted to vent a little cause I'm feeling a little hurt at her comment....and all this time I thought I WAS making specialty cakes....guess I was wrong! LOL!

So she wants a 'special' cake that's made to her specifications, but if she doesn't have fondant on it, then it's not a specialty cake? Oh, sorry, fondue.

Hmm. I was under the impression that little cubes of cake were one of the items one may dip in a dessert fondue.
Although I agree with the poster, may pages ago, who wanted, just once, to see a customer's reaction if one actually delivered a "cake covered with fondue."

The "friend" that chose the Walmart cake clearly didn't regard CakeMommy's feelings and skills as relevant. I am not as sure about your co-worker. Of course it hurt your feelings, but she may not have a clue that she did so. She, like most of the population, have no idea there is a difference between fondant and fondue. Tact is not my strong point, so I would probably just send the paragraph your wrote here to her. Since you likely have more tact than me, rewrite your paragraph in an educational tone telling her about the costs and time involved. You will feel better, and she will have learned something.
Of course, an "educational tone" could be many things. I've been known to take a "lecturing a slow three-year-old" tone with almost anybody who is having trouble grasping something I consider obvious. Including a charge nurse at a hospital (when it became obvious that nobody was quite getting what "no mammal flesh" for my mom [she eats fish, poultry, and vegetables, but no beef, no pork, no veal, no lamb, no mutton, no goat, no rabbit, no buffalo, in other words, no MAMMALS]), or even, when the situation seems to call for it, even my own boss.
I had a customer once ask if I could just decorate 3 sides of a square cake to make it cheaper.
The reason their cake was so "expensive" was not because all 4 sides were decorated, it was because they wanted to double the servings, so instead of cake for 100 people, they wanted cake for 200 people. I assured them, I am a professional, I advise you don't need double the cake, blah blah... they still wanted it.
Then they had the nerve to complain the next day that I didn't come back to the party to "deal" with the leftovers. SERIOUSLY????
Oh my, how I love this thread!
Thank you all for making me feel like I'm not alone :)

Well, why not? And while you are there, you might as well "deal" with the dirty dishes, too!

If "deal with" means take home and eat, I think I have found a new hobby ;)
AI haven't been keeping up with this thread this week because I've been so busy, but that story about the three-side-decorated square cake beats all. Other than the half-off 100th birthday cake. What the heck are people thinking?
OMG! I don't usually get annoyed by much, but I had this one lady who gave me a budget of $60. So I gave her every option I could in that price range for a custom designed Dora cake, just for her to turn around at the total last minute (after I had baked the cake) and tell me that $60 for a cake was a total rip off.
Needless to say, I wanted to strangle her.
Some people just don't understand the work that is involved!!

Just put a minimum order in place for idiots like that. And get paid in advance. I don't shop for ingredients or turn my oven on until everything is paid in full.
Now come on guys a 3 sided decorated only cake is perfectly reasonable. After all if it is against a wall you are not going to see the back of it so why waste time and money on it!
My neighbor who is pregnant wondered if I would make her pregnant sister a cake for her sisters shower...and after asking what sort of cake they wanted and amount they had for the budget....I was told they wanted a 2 tier cake (like a picture I had shown her of a wedding cake I made) with a lot of decorations 10 and 8 in and they was wondering if I could do this sort of cake for around $30.00!!
I told them that I didn't have enough experience to do a cake like that. LOL!
I do plan to make my neighbor a belly cake before her baby is due...but only cause I like my neighbor and her 2 little boys who play in my yard and eat my GD's bakery creations on our "bakery school" days.
I have just finished a cake for lady who wanted a cake for her daughters 18th (not a special occasion at all!!) and when I told her my pricing she called me back two days later and said 'after talking to some of the girls at work who said baking a cake cant be that hard' and asked me if she baked the cake herself (borrowing my tins - as it was a 15in square and recipe) would I be able to decorate it for her as it was really just the decorating part that was hard. I kindly sent her a quote saying that due to quality control attached to my business name it would not be possible! Surprisingly she opted for the cheapest option I gave her!

Pffft...i would have added the PITA fee onto her order for that. Or rented her the cake pans for $50.
AHa haa...love reading all the posts,so much you can relate to! I had a customer who said ' so tell me why I should order from you and not the other bakery... after all I'm sure they're cheaper'!! :-(

You should have said "because my cakes are better, but if you can't afford it I understand." Then she would have bought one from you just to prove that she could afford it.
Edited to add: I had a client who wanted a stack of books cake call to ask me if I would match another baker's price, and after getting some details from him I said that I would give them free delivery but that's all I would do. Then I told him that I had seen the other baker's book cakes, and that I knew that my cakes were not the same as the other baker's, and that's all I was going to say about that. He got the message and hired me. And I think it was somethng like a $150 price difference...

$30????? What the???
AI had a lady call last week and said she needed a shower cake. I asked how big and she said half sheet, so I told her I don't do sheet cakes, how many people ate going to be there. It was 75, and she said she wanted a 3 tear cake. Which was fine. So she asked me how much it would be and I said I had to know what the decoration was to be before I can quote a price but my prices start at $3.50 a serving. So I asked her budget and she says I don't want to spend mote than $75. I just told her that I cannot help her for that, she would need to triple her budget.

Love your answer! Yes, I explained to her my cakes are priced the way they're as they're custom made etc. she told me she needed to explain to her husband as he does not understand why cakes cost so much. Neither did she in my opinion. Over the years I've had some customers who have really checked my limit of patients but for each one of them I've had some truly wonderful ones who make all the pain making my veins pop out worth it!
