Do most of you use the wax paper technique when icing the bottom of your cakes?
I place wax paper slices under my cakes, so that when I smooth out my icing on the bottom, I don't have all of this smeared icing on my cake board. Then, once I'm finished, I gently pull the wax paper from underneath the cake and then put the border on.
Just checking to see what everyone does.

Nope..when I put my icing on around the sides, I don't go all the way to the bottom..I leave about 1/4 of space. Then when I go to smooth it with the spatula it just "kisses" the cake board...so I rarely get any mess on the board. If I do, I just wipe it clean with a wet paper towel.
I agree---the damp paper towel works best for me. I tried the wax paper deal but it's just a waste for me. Spending the time to get it right and then to take it off properly (without taking half my icing with it)!!
If it's really bad, I scrape the excess off the board with the spatula and then just wipe off the rest of the mess with a damp paper towel.
yep...my solution also! Don't have time for wax or parchment paper slices...I'm also cost effective.
I'd rather they pay for more cake..lol

I have used the wax paper technique (I saw my mom do it once and Paula Deen does it too), however, just as many of you have stated, it seems time consuming and I've noticed, my icing is so "Smooth" on the bottom, but the minute I gently slide away the wax paper, it pulls some of the icing (makes it buckle or bubble out) and I have to take the spatula and go around the bottom edges again.
Yal have confirmed it for ME. It just doesn't seem necessary to keep doing.
