I saw my friend make this once by taking a large (I think it was about 4" wide) dowel rod and gluing the top wooden seperator plate to it with gorilla glue. Then after it's dry, she cut the stems of the flowers and glued them around the dowel. Stuck it in the cake at the reception, and it held up great. I also thing that even though the top tier is off center, since it's small, it's not that bad weight wise.

I was just sharing how my friend did hers... gorilla glue is non-toxic and it didn't come in contact with any of the cake, just the bottom of the plate. But I'm sure the hardware idea works great as well.

I was wondering - could I not use this same concept, 'off centered' using a wooden cake board and large dowel - screwed as suggested by cakenuts? Love this version of the 'illusion cake'
Ah, yes, I see what you are saying. I had a plastics shop in our area make clear lucite plates with the solid lucite rods, I would imagine they could do an off set plate as well if you took a picture of this cake with you. The one in my area is called Tap Plastics, not sure if they are outside California.
