I tried to color some icing red tonight as a practice run of my elmo cake coming up and all shades of pink came up but no red. I used cakecraft chinese red, wilton red w/o taste, and both came out pink.

Any tips or advise? Thanks! Jackie

Did you let them dry? most get darker red when they are dry. If not try americolor super red. icon_smile.gif

I had the same problem with my firetrucks. The adivce I got most was to use Americolor. I bought some and it absolutely came out red. And since it comes in a squeeze bottle it is so easy to use. Look at my firetruck to see if that red is good for you. Good Luck.

I have had the same problem. I used an entire container of the no taste red TRYING to get the red color. I added a little of the Christmas red to it and it helped. It also turned more red the more I piped with it. I've also read somewhere you need to make that color up a day or two ahead. Hope this helps.

yep, just another vote here for the americolor red...before them, I used a little orange, then added ALL the red I had....that worked out pretty well.

Hi I was given some excellent advice as well as using Americolor, tint your white pink first. It is much easier to go red than try to colour something white red. Because white and red make pink. Hope that makes sense.

I like to use red Koolaid as a base before adding the coloring to it.

I have an elmo in my photos and on him I used wilton no taste red and americolor red-red. he came out a pretty bright shade and the icing didn't taste bad either. But try cleaning red icing off your counter tops and carpet for a week and you never wanna see elmo again! icon_lol.gif

If you look at my 3D Elmo cake in my photos; I used 1-1/2 to 2 Wilton Red no-taste paste colour jars but as you can see in the end it was too dark. Also for my Spiderman I used about the same quantity.
