We played this 'game' on a parenting forum I go on...

Have you ever had a 'brush with fame'? (met anyone famous)

I met Tommy LaSorta, a coach for some sports team, lol. I had no idea who he was at the time. We were walking by the Riverfront in New Orleans with dh's nephew who is 6'9" and he walked by and asked him how the air was up there, and they all started freaking out asking for his autograph... I felt so silly 'cause I was standing there smiling like an idiot 'cause I had no idea who this man was, lol.

Also, I met Paula Deen and her husband, Michael at a book signing in New Orleans a couple months ago. That was so awesome, I am a big fan of hers icon_biggrin.gif I didn't get to talk to her much 'cause they were rushing people through the line, but my friend and I got our picture taken with Michael, he put his arms around us and said he was like a thorn between two roses icon_rolleyes.gif hee hee, it was so sweet.

Hmm... we went to midnight mass at St. Louis Cathedral on Christmas Eve and saw Harry Connick, Jr.

Saw President Bush's motorcade leaving a press confernce in Jackson, MS and he waved to us.

That's about it,... next??

I waved to John F. Kennedy when he was riding through Manhattan in a convertible. I still like to think it was me he was waving back to me, and not the whole crowd.

I had lunch with James Earl Jones in 1995.

Wow, this is going back a ways. In 1943 my parents took me to a parade in Los Angeles honoring Madame Chiang Kai Shek. People were throwing flowers into her open car and she picked one up and tossed it to me. I was 4 years old so it may not have meant quite as much to me as it did to my parents, and yet 64 years later I still remember it. Here is a writeup about her.
http://www.wellesley.edu/Anniversary/chiang.html

During the Christmas season each year my husband and I always went shopping in San Francisco, the old City Of Paris department store was always so glamorous, with a decorated tree that was in the center of the store and reached probably 12 feet tall. We always made it a habit to visit the showroom window at Gumps and then go to the florists Podesta Baldocchi's to see all of the decorated trees and buy at least one keepsake ornament. In 1973 as we left Podesta's and were walking along Maiden Lane I glanced over and there was a man sitting on a fire hydrant smoking a cigarette and just watching the people go by. I looked twice to be sure and it was the actor James Shigeta (Flower Drum Song). I said hello to him and he gave me a big smile and responded with "Merry Christmas"

Another time in 1989 my sister and I had gone to Sausalito across the bay from San Francisco and played tourist, we had lunch at a well known restaurant called Houlihans, sat outside on the deck overlooking the water. I looked at the back of a man's head, sitting behind my sister and I have no idea on earth how I knew this, but I told my sister excitedly "That's James Woods" she said, who? And I had to name some of his movies before she knew who I was talking about. She thought I was nuts because I couldn't see his face or even hear his voice well. But I was certain, so I casually got up to walk into the restaurant as though visiting the ladies room, turned around and came back and I was right, it was him. I waited until they had finished their lunch and went up and talked to him, told him I had just seen him in the television special Bill W and thought it was brilliant. He was very sweet and told me that had been to the actors film festival in Marin, and he let me take his picture!

Oh, I forgot to mention that I met Herb Alpert and his wife Lanie Hall at a memorial concert for Julius Wechter about 5 years ago. Herb Alpert had the group Tijuana Brass in the 60s, his wife Lanie sang with Sergio Mendes and Brasil '66. And I met Marcia Wallace in the lobby at the concert (Carol, of the old Bob Newhart Show)

Aside from those the celebs it would have to be sugar artists Ewald Notter, Jacques Torres, and Nicholas Lodge. I am such a groupy! icon_redface.gif

And this is living vicariously through someone else. But in 2002/2003 my brother was undergoing Chemo treatments at Stanford hospital and there was another man having treatment at the same time. My brother Bill finally said to him one day "Has anyone ever told you that you look just like Bobby Bonds?" He answered, that was because he was Bobby Bonds. He and Bill became quite the friends over the months, both had lung cancer and of course both loved baseball so they hit it off right away. He even signed a book I gave Bill called "Father's and Son's in baseball" on the page where Bobby and his son Barry were pictured. Now late into treatment Bobby asked my brother if he had been saved, Bill said no, Bobby asked if he wanted to be and Bill said yes. Bobby and two of his friends laid hands on Bill and he was "saved." Bobby passed away in September 2003 and Bill in November of the same year.

Shirley -

I remember seeing James Shigeta in that movie. I have always though him to be a very handsome man. I need to know, is he as handsome in real life as he is in film?

Mine would be about 18-20 years ago when I was waiting tables here in Raleigh. The hostess sat a group down at my tableand when I went over to wait on them, it was Naomi and Wynnona Judd. They were very nice. They were here visiting some friends. They signed an autograph and took a picture with me.

Well, nothing to speak of much here. I've never MET anyone famous. But last summer I was in NYC, and I was coming up the stairs from the subway, and just coming down the stairs was George (don't know his last name) from 'Apprentice'. (I'm a HUGE fan of the show) By the time I realized who I had just seen, he was gone icon_sad.gif

Believe it or not, even Iowa has it's brushes with fame! I cocktailed at the best hotel in town (not saying much) and we had all the singers staying with us. REO Speedwagon guys were very cool, Dierks Bentley stayed in his hotel room, Type O Negative had huge parties. Tim McGraw ate at a restaurant there in town (that was closed due to sanitation problems a month later) while on a motorcycle ride. There were others, but most were up-and-coming bands that I had no clue who they were at the time. No actors, though.

Oh, yeah, and in the 1980's I hung out at a bar with Def Leppard. They were here for a concert, and played a benefit soccer game with the local semi-pro team before the show. My then-best-friend was dating one of the home team members. They showed up at the home team's after-party after the show. We all drank and had a great time. Really cool bunch of guys.

When I was a flight attendant for Pan Am back in 1990, I sat in the jumpseat at the front of the plane and John-John (John F. Kennedy Jr.) was right across from me. It was a short flight from Boston to NY (Thanksgivinh weekend) and he slept the whole way. He was wearing a polka dot tie.

Good fun thread!

hmmm.. I don't have much. Mostly SNL folks.

Spring Break in college at Lake Tahoe we ate at Chevy's and saw Kevin Nealon (I don't even know how to spell his name) having dinner there too. Lots of peple were bugging him for pics and autographs while he was eating and I didn't have to heart to do it too.

Rob Snyder in town for the Superbowl last year to promote that twins movie. (I'm sure there were lots of other famous people there at the time but if they were sports related, I wouldn't have had a clue!)

Jay Leno sighting on a NBC studio tour...

And I recently found out that an old friend takes yoga classes quite often from someone I consider a yoga "celeb". That's kindof close? maybe? LOL...

In 2001 I met and got to present a "Lifetime Achievement" award to Prince. Long story. But that was a "try not to stare...remember to breath and walk forward" moment. He's quite the diva. And very short.

Dre from the grooup Outkast....and various other musicians here in Atlanta.

Coretta Scott King back in college, beautiful, awesome lady she was.

Stedman Graham....oh how I wish it was Oprah. icon_biggrin.gif But he's a really great man, awesome speaker too. And much more than just "oprah's boyfriend".

That's all I can think of right now.

I was sitting at my hotel pool in 1993 on a high school graduation trip to Mexico. I saw this girl sitting across from me and thought she looked liked that girl from My Two Dads. Of course, I thought it couldn't be her! Wrong! We ran into her at the club that night. Not so Nice! And, all I can remember is she had a halter style sundress on with a normal bras!

The only other person I have met who has been somewhat famous is Betty Okino from the 1992 Olympic Gymnasics Team. I went to school with her until 5th grade when she left us to work with Bella Coroli (can't spell) in Texas. I remember when she told us in 1984 that she would be in the Olympics in 1992. Did I mention it was a rural community and no one famous comes from here.

I also met Geoff Goff, who I think plays football for the Chargers now. He is my age and went to another school close by. It's hard to believe he plays professional football because his team never won a game in highschool. They never even came close. I guess you never know!

Jim Thome's dad lives next to a relative, and even though my husband has always been a diehard fan, he won't ask for an autograph!

Hey Ironbaker, my grandma used to work at a grocery store called Byerly's that Prince always shopped at. My grandma worked nights so she got to see alot of people but the one that impressed me the most was Prince. I was a HUGE Prince fan! He always went to her line and he even brought his daughter in to meet her! That was back in the 80's, though.

In 1998 I went to the MTV Video Music Awards (a trip I won through VW) and met just about anybody who was anybody in the MTV world at the time. Andy Dick, Green Day, Steven Tyler, Dean Cain, Adam Corolla and Dr Drew, Goo Goo Dolls, Barenaked Ladies (they are AWESOME, great performers, and very nice people); Gwen Stefani, of course the VJ's to name a few. I had a very hard time coming back home. LOL.

My mom met and had her pic taken with Laura Bush. A highlight in her career. She is an artist and was selected to make a ornament for the white house christmas tree one year.

I met Rosa Parks in some integration convention for school children here in Denver when I was... I dunno. 12 or 13. They picked 100 kids out of all the Denver Public Schools, and I was one chosen. It was cool. Didn't mean as much to me then as it should have, but it does now.

And I met Frank Warren (creator of PostSecret.com) in January at a book signing.

Well certainly no "A-Listers" but I have met Punky Brewster (woo-hoo), Blair (Lisa Welchel) from the Facts of Life, Pat Boone (yippee), Oliver North, Shawn Hannity, Michael Reagan, Alan Keyes, Dave Draveky ( MLB pitcher)...yes, exciting I know...

But I have a sis that works in LA for ESPN and meets them all the time. I love hearing about who she met and what they are really like. She has said some are so nice and just down to earth people and then others are real jerks. I guess that goes for just about any profession, right? icon_smile.gif

She said Keifer Sutherland and Ben Stiller were super nice and just normal people...not pretentious or anything. However, she said Matthew Maconahey was very wierd and kinda smelly and grungy... icon_confused.gif and that Jay Mohr (actor/comedian) was an a$$. (She worked with several actors and athletes for the ESPY Awards and a lot of these guys were presenters.

She also met the couple from The Bachelorette...Trista and Ryan...and said she is nice but that Ryan is a HOTTIE!

I always love hearing her stories...

I did have the pleasure of listening to Martha Stewart speak a few weeks ago at CHA in Annahiem. She was awesome - though I did not actually get to meet her! I would love to meet Keifer Sutherland!! Wow! Lots of brushes with fame! I'll add mine...

When I was a kid, my parents had a taxi business. One of our regular customers brought Jake LaMotta (Raging Bull) to our house to meet my dad who was laid up with a broken leg - he signed his cast! Mom & Dad drove a few famous people over the years (wish they had gotten me autographs!) - Andy Warhol, Robert DeNiro, Billy Joel, Dick Cavett, Halston. Cheryl Tieggs was at an outdoor cafe with a pet lamb her husband had given her - we were allowed to pet it. We also saw Ralph Macchio & Rob Lowe in high school. My mom went to a restaurant and Richard Nixon was there having dinner.

I haven't really "met" anyone famous, but in the last few years I've seen Paul Simon, Jack Nicholson, Christie Brinkley, Diane Keaton, Kelsey Grammer, Jerry O'Connell. Oh and Martha Stewart & Ina Garten. About a month ago, one of my coworkers saw Gwyneth Paltrow.

I'm not good with recognizing stars out of their element, and they usually look much different in real life LOL!

personally, I was on a subway commercial in 1993-1994 so that made me kinda famous in my neighborhood and in my family LOL. my husband watched me on tv (before we had met) with his cousins and they were like we know her. AND my sister in law was on the Road to Stardom with Missy Elliot (reality tv show, she was one of the finalists and we got to go to the live taping, I walked to the bathroom with angie stone, and people were in the bathroom like OMG and I was just waiting for her like her body guard or something lol.

Just a month ago I met Alison Fisher.. the top womans pool player in the world. She signed my husbands cue stick and gave use some pointers on the game, very exciting for us.

My sister in law works at the Philadelphia Art Musuem and met Mick Jagger while he was in the musuem for a private showing.
