Teaching 14 Junior Girl Scouts On Friday

...how to decorate cakes. They will each have an 8in cake. So I was thinking yellow frosting, do a green trefoil outlined with a round tip and filled in with star tip. Then maybe write their name on their cake with a round tip and put some kind of shell or snail trail border around the bottom?
Show them how to crumb coat and explain why. Show the viva method of smoothing their frosting, show how to make a parchment bag. Can you guys think of any other talking points? I want them to be interested but not be on overload.
I think what you have planned sounds great. I taught a one-night cake decorating class to a group of fifteen 12-13 year old girls once. It was so much fun, but I tried to cram too much into 2 1/2 hours. They iced their cakes and did borders and I taught them how to do roses and some Colorflow hearts (I had a few helpers). All of them figured out the rose to at least a degree and about three of them made excellent roses. It was amazing to see who had natural talent.
Anyway, definitely let them ice their own cakes. They'll have so much fun.
Oh...I also did a quick slideshow of my cakes photos at the beginning. They seemed to really enjoy that. I also brought some cake decorating books, various pans, and other tools (even ones we weren't using), just to give them a sense of the scope of cake decorating.
Have fun!
Good Luck! Im sure they will have a great time!
Their hands will also get tired and cramped a lot sooner. Warn them not to lick their fingers all the time or they will start feeling sick to their stomach with too much sugar. LEt them know ahead of time that this is a FUN hobby to learn, but it's also work.
I like the idea of bringing photos and other equipment to show them .... a nice preview of what they can do eventually, plus when you show them some "tricks of the trade", they think that info is so cool to know!
I am an assistant GS leader for a junior group. I think you may want to have the cakes already iced. They might get discouraged when they can't get their icing to look like yours. Let them use the different tips and make their own designs. They will be happier and feel like they have accomplished something that way.
Has anyone ever been hired to do a cake decorating party for a group? I've been asked to do one where I bring the iced cake and teach the simple decorating techniques and then the girls decorate thier own cakes. What would you charge per person for a party like this? Just curious.
