okay so, today was my first time using fondant. well i made it yesterday but started playing with it today. anyway, i wanted to make a cake of the backyardigans for fun. so, i've made the figures and all but geee! it wasn't easy at all. i didn't know it would dry up so fast. i coloured the fondant ahead of time so when i was ready to start making the figures i'd have everything ready for me to pick off and use. i didn't know the fondant would dry up so quickly. everytime i switched colours i had to put it in the microwave for 5 secs. but in the end i was satisfied with the results. too bad it was just for fun. i wish i could of made this for someones birthday. if i say so myself it was a pretty cute cake! icon_biggrin.gif .. well i kind of made it for my baby sisters who love the backyardians so i guess it wasn't a waste! and i just wanted to show off to my mom..seems like something she would wowed about since she doesn't believe that i could make cakes! icon_razz.gif lol
but are they suppose to be completely dry when you put it on the cake? and is it normally eaten? because seems kind of hard and not so yummy to eat lol. just wanted to share my excitement with all you cc members. i learned it all from you guys icon_biggrin.gificon_biggrin.gif
i'll post pictures tmr if anyone's interested!
p.s. sorry if this was too long, i'm too happy because this was actually the first decourated cake that i've made icon_biggrin.gificon_biggrin.gificon_biggrin.gif

Congrats on jumping into making and using fondant! One way to keep it from drying out so quickly is to keep it tightly wrapped in plastic wrap when you are not using it. It should stay soft if you do that. The wrapped leftovers can then go in a ziploc bag so they are 'double' wrapped, for use later on. Fondant keeps a while, and as you learned, can be zapped in the m/w if it gets hard.

I know we would all love to see the picture. Your cake sounds really cute and like you put a lot of time and effort into it. Glad you had fun. It's definitely an addiction!! icon_smile.gif

Did you use wilton fondant or did you make the marshmallow fondant? Wilton fondant will dry up very quickly and I find it nasty to eat.....dry or soft. But the marshmallow fondant is very tasty. Especially if flavored with lemon or orange extract, in my opinion.

My mmf takes a very long time to dry out and never gets super dry. I have never had it harden on a a cake. It still easily cuts. I use about 5 tablespoons of water in mine. It should have a nice stretch, but not be gooey or too stretchy.

what's the recipe for the mmf that you use? because the one i use only calls for 2 tbsps of water.

and here's a picture of the cake i made. alot of things went wrong but meh, good enough for my first time..right? icon_biggrin.gif i have no idea where i was trying to go with the tree lol. kinda ran out of icing for the leaves LOL. and if you noticed the cake balls..i had to use it to hold up the tree. the cake overall looked okay..but basically i just liked the figures icon_lol.gif

Tolinda - your figures are so cute!

I need to do a cake for boss's birthday (should that be DB - "dumb" or "dear" fits perfectly) which incorporates a cartoon crow. I was going to do a standing cookie, but you've given me inspiration for a MMF figure!

What did you use to get the pieces to stick together? When I did FILO clay figures, water worked fine, since they were baked in oven. Did you need to use Icing for "glue"?

WONDERFUL job, girl! It looks GREAT! thumbs_up.gifthumbs_up.gif
