Hi Everyone,
Just recently I made a castle cake and had trouble with making the towers. I made a regular sheet cake, froze it, and cut out circular pieces of cake to stack and make the tower. The problem I had is that although the towers stood firm while frozen, they fell over as soon as the cake thawed. Any pointers on how to prevent this from happening? I ended up doweling the towers from the side, but would like to avoid sticks in cakes if possible. Thanks. Laura
It depends on how high you're stacking the towers, but I think you'll need to support them some way in order to stabilize them. Can you use rice krispie treats instead? I used them for a castle cake, but I also used skewers to support them.
Hmm, are you adverse to using a papertowel roll? I just used a 1/3 to a 1/2 of a roll on each of my towers, covered in foil then later iced with bc. I made a small notch in the cake where each tower sat. They were so solid I didn't use any dowels or other means of attaching. The pink castle I made is in my photos. Let us know what you do!
I used skewers down the center of the towers and into my cake. I left them extra long so I could rest my ice cream cone turrets on top. When it came time to serve, I just pulled the skewers out and the kids were fighting over who got to eat the towers! ![]()
Irishprincess, what a great idea. I used paper towel tubes & ice cream cones covered in MMF. Didn't need the extra cake.
I am going to attempt a castle cake this week. I think I'm going to use styrofoam pillars wrapped in plastic then fondant with the ice cream cone on top. I'll definitely put skewers through the pillar and into the cake. I think I'll also wait till I get to the customer's house to attach the towers to the cake.
I used rice Krispy treats for my towers and they worked great. I covered them with bc and mmf and they looked just like the rest of the cake (which was real cake).
