It looks like the quilt blocks were done out of fondant squares, and would be very difficult to replicate in buttercream without an airbrush.

You could try Pming msbask. Everyone I have run into on CC have been very helpful. It might be worth a try. She did a beautiful job. Good luck with your special cake. thumbs_up.gif

I bet you could pipe the squares in BC with a large round tip or better yet the large Icing tip and then smooth them over with either the Viva method or the Melvira method.

Or make FBCT squares to place on the cake?

I would ice the cake in white and let it crust only slightly. Then take the colors you want the squares to be and use a flat tip to pipe them on the cake, then put a viva towel over the top and use a foam roller and roll over it to get it all even. This is the technique I used for my bridal shower cake to get the yellow lines flush with the pink background. I'm not sure if you would have the lines from the tip or not though. Might be worth a try!

I think you could do the frozen buttercream transfer method with solid squares.

I just did a pink & purple birthday cake in squares last week. I crumbcoated and lightly scored where I wanted the squares to go. Used the large icer tip, and smoothed with viva after it crusted.

One thought might be to ice the entire cake in white first. Refrigerate until
firm. Then cut templates out of waxed paper to your size squares you need. One for each square. Lay that over the area to be iced, and ice the area smooth as you normally would. Carefully remove the template, and voila! smooth, precise squares.
