I'm using Wilton fondant for a wedding cake next weekend (Oct. 29). Two things:
1) How do I make it taste better? I've never used fondant before and didn't realize it tasted so awful, but it is what the bride wants, so I have to figure it out, quick!!

2) I'm using Wilton fall leaf cut-outs for the topper. I made some yesterday with the fondant and then "painted" them with plain food coloring to give them the look of being a real leaf. They turned out beautifully, and they looked great on the practice cake I made, but how long do they take to dry? If I made them tomorrow, will they be dry by next Friday? If not, is there an alternative I can use!

Please help. I'm starting to panic.

Also, where can I get a 14" pan for the bottom tier. I live in a rural county and I can't even find one in the Wal-Mart here!

I'm no expert, but some have advised adding a couple of drops of Loran candy flavoring. Wilton fondant is horrible and I personally don't think the flavorings help. You can make your own fondant, either regular fondant or marshmallow fondant. There are recipes in the recipe section here and on the Wilton site. icon_biggrin.gif

I haven't make fondant decorations, but I think a week would be plenty long enough to dry so you can use them. icon_smile.gif

I don't know about the 14 inch pan.

Getting a 14" pan sounds like it will be a little tricky.

Since there's nobody local, I'd try calling one of the online sites to see if they can rush you the cake pan. Don't blindly order without talking to someone since they won't realize it is a rush.

A short list of places to try (I've never ordered from any of these - just trying to throw ideas out there since you are so short on time):

I did my first fondant wedding cake 2 weeks ago... i was going to go ahead and use Wilton but after reading all the posts on it and how awful it tastes i decided to do the Marshmellow fondant... it's yummy!! and cheap to make, which is bonus!!! i put a little vanilla in the MMF and i have 2 orders now off the one wedding for the exact flavor...

go to the article section and find it.. its pretty easy.. i had to adjust my recipe a bit.. once i mixed up the sugar and marshmellows and it became a dough it was too dry so i added another tablespoon of water and it was very workable.. for a first time cake i also made the fondant just a little thicker than what everyone suggested.. it was easier to work with and hide flaws .. my cake turned out much better than i ever imagined... i cant wait to do my next one...

Good luck..

Thanks for the tips!

I definitely will try the MMF. It sounds great and fairly easy.

I have always avoided using fondant because of the taste. I recently made a cake for my son's birthday, and I wanted that smooth fondant finish. I searched Cake Central for fondant recipes, and discovered a great marshmallow fondant. It has a fabulous taste, is easy to work with and from my experince, does not weep.

Stain Ice is a brand of fondant! It is not as sugary sweet as MMF.
