Help, Im losing sleep over these FBCTs now, can you tell me what consistency the icing needs to be for these and also roughly how thick they need to be, the first few Ive done are probably about 5mm thick although the actual pictures look squiggly so I think I need to push them in a bit more. Im worrying now about pushing them into the iced cake, how will I make them look nice and flat, Im just dreading it in case this cake comes out awful as its for a little boys birthday party on Sunday and its for 80 people, Im more used to using fondant icing and maybe I should have stuck with this really but Ive not got much time to change my mind if I am gonna do this. I found it so hard trying to get to sleep last night because I kept having all these images of the cake going totally wrong and me letting the little boy down.

I use a pretty thick icing for the black borders and medium to fill in. When I put them on the cake, they don't sit flat, I just put a border around them. You can either use a complimentary color (what I tend to do) or pipe a border the same color as the cake so it will blend in. I don't know if there is a way to make it sit perfectly flat on the cake.

I saw someone post on here that they put there FBCT on then they build their icing up around it..........so it's flat on the cake......then they smooth it all out. Their pictures looked great!

Hope this helps!

sometimes if the cake surface that the FBCT is going on is fairly small I will do the whole cake top as a FBCT and that way it is flat.

When I needed my FBCT to be flat I just didn't put any icing on the back and was just real careful putting it on the cake, it worked great.

I am very new to cake decorating, but I have also recently tried a FBCT. I too, had problems with it being raised. I also used the same design that I used for the FBCT using piping gel and I loved it. I have done 2 more cakes since with piping gel and I found it to be sooo easy. The design goes on the cake flat, and you fill it in right on the surface of the cake. It is like cororing with buttercream. I have pictures of them, but since I am not too computer savvy, I have yet to figure out how to put them on here. As soon as I can get someone to help me, I will post the pictures.

thank you for all your help, I'll be glad when this cakes finished with, not sure if cake decorating is for me really as I seem to spend too much time worrying about everything.

One last question a lot of you have said you pipe a border around the transfer, what sort of borders do you use?

I have only done the drop stars so far. Once you put it on the cake you can just try and envision what will go with the decor around it. I completely understand your stress. I love decorating but get myself so worked up. icon_smile.gif

Marcy11, Did you add piping gel to the buttercream? How much did you use?

No, I did not add the piping gel to the buttercream, I just tinted the gel black, and used a disposable bag with a #1 tip to trace my design onto wax paper. I then very carefully flipped the wax paper onto the iced cake and lightly pressed the design onto the cake, and then very carefully removed the wax paper. It works great!! Once the design was transfered onto the cake, I used black buttercream with a larger tip, (I used a #3 tip), and I retraced over the piping gel. Then I just filled in the design with as many colors of buttercream as I needed for my design. I hope this helps!! I used the tutorial on this site, and I have to say, I find it to be very easy, and you have a completely flat surface to work on. I found that when I tried the FBCT it was raised more than I liked. Good Luck...if you try it, you will love it!!
