I need to make crawfish and crabs, and was wondering if fondant, or gumpaste would work with candy/choc. molds? I dont have time to make them all by hand, unless I really have to.
I need a crab mold that is atleast 3" and crawfish that are about 3", if possible.. any idea where I can find some? If not, i'll have to stick to the smaller ones i've found... if they work.
I have seen it done before, it's just a matter of pressing the fondant into the mold, and leveling the back part of the fondant.
Try getsuckered.com - they have a lot of great molds http://www.getsuckered.com/category.aspx?categoryID=49
I know it works but I don't know about the size. I have run into the same problem needing butterflies, tiny ones.... so I have had to buy itsy bitsy cookie cutters for my project, so maybe if you can't find a candy mold you could do a cookie cutter twice with fondant, and put something in the center like BC to fatten the crab up.
I find that if the mold has a lot of details--fine lines, etc.--that if I dust the fondant (not the mold) and then put it in the freezer for a few minutes, the piece comes out easily with nice crisp features. If you dust the mold, sometimes the cornstarch fills up the details and it comes out looking "flat".

Great advice. I'm using a mold to do a baby shower cake this weekend and will give your ideas a try. I used Lindy Smith's modeling paste recipe to mold some polar bears for a birthday cake I did and thought it worked really well. I'll be using some of that for my baby as well.
