I am doing a "Cars" cake my little boy's bday. What's the best way and the best tasting substance to make the black road. Could it be done with something other than icing or fondant???

I have seen black edible glitter, but it would take a lot to cover. and you probably couldn't draw the lines in the road.

How about dark chocolate? You can use white chocolate for the lines, if needed.

I just did a racetrack cupcake cake...see my photos. I did the road out of dark gray/black BC. I just used the large icer tip and piped it on. It was super easy.

good luck!

I have used white candy clay and then just fold in some black. Believe it or not, it takes the black extremely well and the kids love the taste of candy clay.

I thought about that too, but that's more commonly used for dirt in garden cakes and wouldn't give the look of a smooth road. I like the candy clay idea though! icon_smile.gif

I did a cake with a road through the middle of it, I used the black sugar Wilton makes that you can buy at halloween. Everyone commented on how real the black tar on the road looked.

If you live near a Target store, go to the candy section and look for soft licorice. I believe it is an Australian brand. I have seen this used for Tappits lettering, and it was very nice. It is very soft and can be rolled out.

I would use chocolate buttercream tinted black and just smooth it and draw the road lines with white icing.

I'd melt some chocolate, tint it black, mix in some mashed oreos (for the gravel) and spread it out like tar.

I used chocolate MMF and cut an oval shape out of it for my race car cake (picture is in my photos).
