Oh woe is me! I need to make a stand-up Thomas the Tank Engine cake by Friday and I thought I could get the Wilton 3-D choo-choo train pan at Michael's but they didn't have it! It is too late to order one. I know Debbie Brown's Lovable Characters book has a carved one from a sheet cake..but unfortunately I can't get the book in time either. Does anyone know how to carve a train cake?

I did one, it's in my gallery.
I'll add the "naked" cake pic, when it was carved, before it was iced. It might help?

I pressed a cookie cutter into the front to get the circle shape for the cylinder. then I used a breadknife to cut the length of it into the rounded shape, as far as the cab area. (does that make sense? LOL, all I had was the tiny little picture in the credits of the Debbie Brown book that *doesn't* have the instructions.

I also refered to instructions to make a firetruck (DBrown) to get a basic idea.

If I were to do another, I would trim the crusts off the cake better, before I started.

I've also seen them done with a jelly roll for the cylindrical part on the front.

Thank you Chyna! That does help! I'm going to give the carving a try.
