Are you planning on covering the whole cake in gold? If so an airbrush is probably what you would want, you'd need to mix it with everclear or vodka.
If you just want gold accents you make it into a paint and brush it on.
Some people use water and stuff but it doesn't evaporate as quickly as alcohol, the higher the alcohol content the faster it dries, I prefer everclear.

I think it is pretty much a science, but I wasn't the scientist who discovered it. It was a customer service rep from Creative Cutters in Canada. Mix gold luster dust with Super Pearl luster dust, about 2 parts gold to 1 part pearl. Thin with Everclear, Vodka or something with an alcohol base, to about the consistency of household wall paint. Adding the Super Pearl luster dust to either gold or silver gives you a true shiny metallic color.
For fondant or royal icing, just mix the gold dust, -mine doesnt say luster dust, in fact it doesnt say anything-, with vodka, to make a Paste, and brush, thats all, see my photos for a gold and red cake, and some accents in gold in some other, the cake in my Avatar
was half white, half gold.
