I am needing some ideas to make a cake for 3 people who's interests are Italy and wine. I know I have seen some "wine" themed cakes out there, but can't remember where.

If you are able to get the 3D bowling pin cake pan...you could make it look like a wine bottle. I have tried buying it on ebay, but always get outbid. You might be able to make a template and cut it out of a sheet cake.

I would make a sheet cake...
Then if you can get an edible image of the country of Italy put that on the cake first...or a BC transfer of Italy would work as well...
Then I would do a BC transfer of a wine bottle...
Hope this helps you...

In the gallery, there are some wine bottle cake pictures in the "Food" section. I also just recently noticed another section - "wine, beer and cigars" (I think).

I recently made a wine basket cake. (2) 9X13 cakes cut in half lengthwise and stacked. Chocolate basketweave on the sides and brown fondant braided rope handles on either end. I couldn't find a wine bottle mold so I cut a plastic wine bottle...I cut half of it off from just below the neck to the base leaving the top intact. I poured chocolate in to make the neck solid and then poured more in several layers to make the body of the bottle. When I pulled it out of the plastic bottle it looked like a bottle with a cork. I pushed it into the cake top so it looked like a wine bottle nestled in a basket. I made a neckband and label out of fondant and painted them. With straw colored fondant, I made straw for the packing material around the bottle. I made grapes out of fondant and glued them together in bunches with royal icing. I also made a stem for the tops of the grape bunches out of brown fondant. I then coated the grapes with an egg wash and sprinkled pink and silver dust on the green grapes and blue and silver dust on the purple grapes. I made green buttercream leaves on the grape bunches. If you are interested in this idea let me know and I can post a picture tomorrow night. I'm picking up my pictures from the developer tomorrow afternoon...

I saw a cake in the gallerie here that was tiered and used filled wine glasses as supports. I thought it looked really cool, and could probably be make to look less weddingie... just an idea

Thanks guys. Those are all wonderful ideas. I will post the picture after I finish - the date for the cake still hasn't been decided on yet.
