I was thinking of starting my own small cake decorating business at my own home. Once I get more experiance (after wilton course 2) I want to try it...I LOVE LOVE LOVE cake decorating, and i want to absorb as much info on it as possible, thats why this site is awesome. But anyways! Does anyone here have any tips on having a small home business? Does anyone here have one? I want to get started early so I can build 10 feet tall cakes by the time im 25!
Thanks so much!

Start baking, baking, bakning, and then baking some more. And give away a lot of free cakes along with your business cards. If they like them they will come back. GOOD LUCK

Ok
Seems like there is so much to think about with it!
Such as...should the customers choose their design, or should I give a bunch of designs to choose from so im not screwed if I am somehow unable to do a customer design...

Hello Nadineelyce,

Be careful if you do not get licenced as there are heavy fines in Alberta if you get caught.

Make sure you check into all of the laws and licensing in your area. That is extremely important to keep from paying fines and having problems later. Ahmommy is absolutely right. I took some cookies that I made to my insurance rep for her kids, she liked them so much I have an outstanding order of 100 a week for her major business clients, plus she has my cards on her desk. All because of a gift for her kids.

Good luck in your cake business!!! But like others said, make sure you get all the licenses and permits, and everything.... I have my own at-home cake business, I'm registred at the Government and the city hall. It all depends of your Province and your town's law!!

Keep us posted on how it goes!!!!

anothe thing to keep in mind. Cake decorating is one thing, running a business is another. Two whole different (and difficult) sets of skills.

Yeah. Thanks for the tips guys!
I think I will hold off for a while yet.
Gain some more valuble experience, save some extra money, wait until I have some extra time for it!
Until then I'll just make cakes for every occasion as possible, and practice practice practice!
Thanks!
