I'm really new at this and I love the off shoots that everyone is using. What kind of wire are you using and how do you attach it?

She means whirligigs. wires with stuff on them flying over the top tier of cake. icon_smile.gif

I've seen lots of cakes with stars or bugs like butterflies or bees that are coming out of the cake at the end of a curled wire. Make sense?

I use a fairly stiff wire- like a floral wire. They could be straight or curved-or twisted around a pencil to look springy.

i insert in cake by cutting a coffee stirer/cocktail straw to the corret hight-so that it goes all the way into the cake w/out being seen -and then inserting the wire inti that ( so that the wire doesn't come into contact with the cake).

some people dip the wire in chocolate- i have found that the wire stays put better w/out tearing through the cake esp. at a wierd angle, if i use the straw first!

Should the wire NOT come into contact with the cake? Why? Just curious.

well i know some people here have been concerned that it is not a food product per say- and also that if in a cake for an extended time could degrade to some degree- so i just figure people out there who eat my cakes might feel the same and for the little extra effort better safe than sorry- plus food safety aside I really think they stay put better w/ the straws but thats just MO icon_smile.gif
