Do most of you use wood dowels to hold up your cakes? And if so, do your customers think it's strange to cut into it and find wood sticks?
How do you clean the dowels before placing them into the cake? I would think water/soap would soak into the wood therefore ruining the flavor of the cake?

I use food grade plastic dowels which I buy from my local decorating store. I do normally advise my clients that they will find these inside the cake and once I explain their purpose the clients are always finf with it. After all who wants a collapsed cake?

I use wooden dowels that are packaged for food use. I don't wet them because I think they might soften and weaken...I simply wipe them with a damp towel and dry them immediately. So far, everyone understood why I needed them.
