Ok ladies...I need your help. My husband's company wants a sheet cake that is 4 feet by 3 feet! I have not made a cake this big....but would love your opinion on how to put it all together, and if any of you have done this....or if you have pictures of any large cakes you've done. Thanks for your help!
I have never done one. Having said that ....
I would guess you would make several half-sheet (12x1
cakes and put them together on site. Ice the sides that will be showing and then put them together like a puzzle and smooth the whole thing out when you're done assembling on site. I think you would end up with a 4x3 grid of cakes. That would get you your 4' by 3' cake.
Let us know how you do!
The huge cakes Earlene has on her web page have been assembled onsite.
For something this big, I think you'd have to do that. Unless you have a van there's no way you could transport it, and even then you'll have to worry about cracks in your icing because whatever board you put it on is going to flex.
Good luck, and I don't envy you this one.
(OK, maybe I do
)
WHEN I USED TO MAKE ICE CREAM CAKES THIS IS WHAT WE DID AT THE STORE. MAKE A BUNCH OF 1\\2 SHEET CAKES AND PUT THEM TOGETHER. WHEN YOU PUT THEM ON THE BOARDS GO VERY CLOSE TO AN END AND A SIDE. YOU WILL HAVE TO CUT A SIDE OF THE CAKE OFF AND PART OF THE BOARD AS WELL. DO WHAT CAKESBYELLEN SAID AND PUT IT TOGETHER LIKE A BIG PUZZLE. IT WILL BE VERY SIMPLE. I HOPE THAT CAN YOU PICTURE WHAT I AM SPEAKING ABOUT BECAUSE I DON'T HAVE ANY PICTURES OF WHAT I DID. THAT WAS A LONG TIME AGO. ICE YOUR CAKES LIKE USUAL EXCEPT FOR THE SIDE THAT YOU CUT OFF BEFORE YOU GO THE PLACE TO SET IT UP. WHEN YOU GET TO THE PLACE YOU WILL BE ABLE TO PUT IT ALL TOGETHER. WHEN YOU ARE AT HOME, MAKE SURE YOU NUMBER THE BOARDS AHEAD OF TIME SO YOU KNOW EXACTLY WHERE EACH BOARD WILL GO WHEN YOU ARRIVE TO SET IT UP. WHEN YOU GET THERE IF YOU HAVE EVERYTHING EXACTLY LINED UP YOU WON'T HAVE TO ICE WHEN YOU GET THERE BECAUSE YOU WILL HAVE THAT DONE AT HOME, MAYBE JUST TOUCH UP A LITTLE WHEN YOU GET THERE. GOOD LUCK. IF YOU GET STUCK, JUST LET ME KNOW ON HERE AND I WILL TRY TO WALK YOU THROUGH IT. HOPE THIS HELPS!
I did one like this for my Dad's 50th birthday a few years ago (2x4.5, actually). I made six half sheet cakes for the base and a seventh half sheet for a top decoration. I ended up putting two half sheet together to form one full sheet, so I eventually ended up with three full sheets. Since my main decoration was on the seventh half sheet, I only frosted and trimmed the full sheets. Since the cake was so big, I assembled onsite, but I still had my brother-in-law take all the cakes in his SUV. But it was pretty fast and easy since I had the main decoration on the seventh cake, which I placed on top of the center cake. One thing that helped tremendously (especially since I had my brother-in-law take the cakes and I don't trust anyone with my cakes=) was that I went to Home Depot bought some wooden panels, had them cut them to full sheet size (26x19), then put some white contact paper on them. I also stapled some trim to it, so the cake would look nicer.
I haven't had a chance to post photos of my cakes yet, but I'll try to do it in the next day or so, so you can get a better idea of what I am talking about.
