I just have to vent, and since my husband isn't home (not that he would understand if he were), I'm venting to all of you!!! I HATE MY OVEN!!! I'm currently living in Italy (my husband is in the military). I have one of the smallest kitchens I've ever seen. . .there's no room to work or put anything. And my oven sucks. There's only one rack and there's only enough room for one round cake pan. I'm trying to bake a 3 layer checkerboard cake and it is taking forever, since I have to bake it one layer at a time. Another reason why it's taking so long is that I had to throw away the first cake and now have to bake another. The first layer was burnt all around and could not be salvaged, second layer was alright but the top started to crack, and the third layer was actually pretty good. I totally blame the oven. The burnt layer was the first one to bake, so I don't know why it burned that one and not the rest. I didn't change the temp or anything. This isn't the first time I've had issues with the oven, this just pushed me over the edge.
I feel a little better, thanks for letting me vent!

I understand how small those ovens are! I used to live in Holland when my dad was in the AF and our oven was just as small. Now I know why we never had turkey for Thanksgiving!!!

Anyway, What temperature do you set the oven at? Is it gas or electric! Maybe a temperature lower than 325 would work better. Maybe take a bit longer (not that you need LONGER) but it might at least keep you from having to rebake and rebake! I'm just guessing here!

Good luck!

Just remember Julia Child started with one of those. The picture of the 6 foot tall Julia towering over her stove in her french apartment is daunting.

Don't fret just keep experimenting and find a good thermometer. My house came with a huge stove, 4 burners, a flat grill in the center and two ovens. Most people drool at the site of it. Leveling the burners, leveling the stove itself and adjusting the oven temps has been a chore. One oven was more than 75 degrees too hot, which didn't make a lot of difference until I started baking more cakes.
