I have heard this also, but i colour my flowers with dry chalk or petal dusts. For the orchids on this cake

I actually just coloured the center with green dust (the middle bit is done in yellow gumpaste) and made the dots using a toothpick and some red liquid food coloring.

I agree - dry petal dust is the best way, imho. then I steam them.

Making a dye out of color and vodka is fast and easy, but I think it makes the flowers look plastic and artificial.

I agree about the dry dusting and then steaming--I think it yields the prettiest results.

The ones in my photos were done with pedal dust. Very easy to do then steamed quickly to set in the color.

Dry dust for sure, then steam. The only time I use vodka and color is when I am going to do dots on cymbidiums or veins and I need to paint.
