I've never used a cake core, but I have several larger cakes coming up next week and I'd like to try it.

I've seen them at the store, but I don't know how to use them! How does it work?

I just bought and used one...it's in the oven now!

According to the directions, you put it in the pan, pour the batter in the pan and then put some in the core. When the cake is done, you cool it for 10 minutes, take the core out and then take the cake out of the core, take the cake out of the pan and cool. Then before you ice, you put the cake from the core into the main cake and ice.

If I'm wrong...God help me! icon_lol.gif

Not sure if I've used them the correct way, but grease and flour them just like the pan, set in the middle of the pan, fill just under halfway with batter, of course fill the pan also with batter as you would normally. Bake the usual time, cool and pop out. When I did mine, the cake pulled away from the core while cooling and I removed it, took the cake out of the core and positioned it back into the hole that was formed for the remainder of the cooling period.
Anyone that has better luck doing things differently let us know!
Good luck! thumbs_up.gif

My fear is that I will use the core, put the little cake circle back in the hole, and the cake will fall apart in that spot when it's cut.

Anyone have that happen to them?

Or am I better off putting a flower nail in the cake?

I'm full of questions today!

Hey Sammy,
I have used the core and the nails, I like the Flower Nails better because I dont have to worry about the Cake in the Core Falling apart, or Drying out. (it dried out while sitting on the counter cooling & waiting for me to Put it together.) & I did Grease and flour inside and outside, That has been my Downside to the Core. But even when it did come out in 2 pieces it didn't have an effect on the finished cake. The nails work very well but the largest I have done with a nail was a 14 inch. and a half a sheet cake too. So I am thinking if they work this well on this size they should be fine for yours.
Good Luck!

SweetCreations is right. You should probably use the Flower Nails. I use them all the time. For my larger cakes like sheet cakes of all sizes and things like that, I use more that 2 nails. I space them out to make sure that the cake cooks evenly throughout! Just grease them like you do the pan and sit them in the pan before you pour the batter in flat side down. It works great all the time. I never have a big hole in the middle of my cakes. Hope this helps! - Kenya

Kenya,

I think that's exactly what I'll do when I do my upcoming cakes.

Thanks so much everyone for the advice! I still want to try the cake core, but I think I'll try that on a cake I'm making for my family, so if I goof it up, it won't matter.

Thanks again,

Sammy
