Hello someone at my DD's work wants me to make her a cake for her friend's shower, I'm not even selling cakes!!! I'll do it as a favor I guess but I am not licensed to sell cakes should I do it? If yes I guess this is what she says she wants a vanilla, buttercream icing sheet cake for 25 people with baby stuff, in light green pink and black she said she will bring a swatch to work for me to see the shades, a very simple cake I guess she is on a budget, first of how much would wal mart charge for something like this? is a sheet cake 13 x 9? how much would you charge? she saw my topsy turvy cake and can't possible afford something very fancy. Also I don't think I'm good enough to charge any money for my cakes see photos I'm still very new at this, Should I charge a lot less for that reason? Or should I not do it at all since I'm not licensed? Thanks in advance
If you want to make the cake....
Tell her up front your not licensed. Let her know she will have to cover the cost of all the supplies for the cake. Figure out what they will cost you, and get it up front. Then have fun...
Oh, I would DEFINATELY do the cake for her! Don't worry about not being licensed - that doesn't mean you don't know how to bake and decorate WONDERFUL cakes! I looked at your photos and your cakes are really great. They are SO much better than anything you would find at Wal-Mart. It seems the going rate here in OKC at quality bakeries is $20-25 for a basic sheet cake (don't know what Wal-Mart charges and frankly, don't care). I would charge that much. And if you end up doing a lot of intricate work, maybe knock it up to $30. Most of my sheet cakes go for $25 - 45. And I sell a LOT of them. One of my most popular baby shower cakes is a 1/4 sheet cake (9X13 which is actually bigger than most bakery 1/4 sheet cakes) looks kind of like a quilt with baby rattles and booties piped on it - VERY easy. If you need any help, call me - I am close by.
Thank you all so much for your nice comments about my cakes I have told this girl I do not sell cakes, I am still wondering though if the 9 x 13 cake pan will feed about 30 people or less she said,
I also have never iced a sheet cake are they any easier or harder or the same as round cake? Stupid question I know, well she wants a simple cake, Kerri I love your cake!!!!! how did you get all the different color squares??? Can I pm so I can give you my number and I can quickly ask you how you did the shapes by just piping? After kids go to bed you should hear the noise I hear right now!!!LOL
Ellamtehalima ----- I haven't made roses in sooooo long!!! I stopped cause they were not getting any better I am now taking new classes and they will cover roses as well I'm hoping maybe a fresh lesson might help thank you all so much!!!!
I use a 9 x 13 for 25 servings: that's slightly larger than a 2 x 2 slice. If you do the math it comes out to 29.25 servings (2x2 size). You can probably stretch that a little more if you torte and fill and make it higher.
The next larger pan is a 11 x 15 which serves 35 to 40.
You should do it...I don't think being licensed is an issue. I am sure that there are many people on here that isn't. why is that a big deal? sorry...Guess I am uneducated about it.
But your work is fabulous...And please post after!!
I use the 9x13 all the time, if you do it 3 inches tall...Wilton says it feeds 45 people...You will be fine!!
Oh and I charge $40 for my 9x13
