...a picture of the wedding cake from In Style Weddings magazine from fall 2006 pg. 262 (or 260)? It is called "wedding dress". A bride wants me to make something similar and I need some advice on it... but I cannot find any pics of it online! Can somebody help me find the pic... or if you have seen it help me know how do it it? Your help is appreciated thank you! icon_smile.gif

I wish I could be more helpful, InStyle is one of the few magazines I don't keep by the year, but maybe if you contacted their editorial department they would be able to send you a picture?

I have the magazine and the picture, it is not Toba's wedding dress cake. The caption on it is "A four tiered cake covered in pale blue fondant. White royal icing and fondant mimic the embroidery, white silver dragees replicate the beads." I will PM you, to see how to get you a picture.

I decided to take a picture of the picture! icon_biggrin.gif I hope that you can see it clearly enough! I am not sure of the tier sizes so that it would look right (I was thinking, 12,10,8,6), and I am not sure how many layers there are in each tier. The other thing that boggles my mind icon_confused.gif is the swirly (for lack of a better term) embroidery. Any help on this is appreciated. The white accents are in fondant with royal icing patterns on them. TIA! icon_biggrin.gif

It is a twi inch difference in size from cake to cake. I am sure you can pick what size you want to match the nimber of servings closely.

I would charge $3.00 minimum a slice if not more.

thats alot of detail (AND FONDANT!) . whether hand cutting tiny squares of fondant or piping them on, plus gettin' out the ole' tweezers for the dragees...... at least $5-$6 a serving.

I did a wedding cake for a bride who had a heaviled embroiyed dress. The gave me a picture of the dress and I photocopied and enlarged the pattern then followed to pipe the small dots that made up the pattern. It was a 3 tier cake and very time consuming but well worth my effort. The bride loved the cake. We are not allowed by law to charge by the slice/serving in Australia.

Thanks ladies for your replies! icon_biggrin.gif They are very helpful! I was also wondering if anybody could tell me how many layers of cake make up each tier. This is what I was thinking but was wondering if it is correct... starting from the bottom... 2,3,1,2... does that seem right? This kind of messes me up for knowing how much to charge because I follow the wilton serving chart and they only go by 2 layer cakes... but maybe I will go by that anyway. icon_smile.gif I was thinking of doing the cakes 12,10,8,6. I think she will be serprised icon_surprised.gif at the cost of the cake so I am scared to charge her too much. icon_rolleyes.gif
One more thing... are the "swirls" fondant and royal icing or just royal icing? Thanks again for you help! icon_smile.gif

It looks like a combo of piping and applique molded fondant. I do not see dragees?? I see maybe a peral border along the bottom tier. I would do it in Royal and fondant pieces. HTH

So, basically I would just have to find a way to cut that shape out of fondant and then decorate it with royal icing? icon_eek.gif I am not sure how I will do that and have it look right! The squares and stuff will be fairly easy (just time consuming), it's just those "swirls" that have me all worked up. icon_biggrin.gif
There are some dragees on this cake... but she told me to leave them out! icon_smile.gif

They have applique molds for fondant.. you wont have to cut anything out... you may not be able to find the exact shape but i've seen the mold that looks like that one... it would be VERY easy.

Sweet! I have never seen these molds! Where can I get them... and how do they work? Thank you all so much for your help! The bride knows that I am on here looking for advice... she is very easy going. Thank the Lord! icon_lol.gif

I found some at a local cake supply store but i'm sure they are all over the net... the ones i've seen are blue and they are just a rubber/cylecone mold.. you plop your fondant into it.. let it dry, pop it out and cut the edges off.. viola!

i think they could be either sugarcraft fmm or ck brand. you should expect to spend around 20-80 per mold depending on size and pattern detail.

http://images.google.com/imgres?imgurl=http://www.sugarcraft.com/catalog/gumpaste/lacewrapdir.jpg&imgrefurl=http://www.sugarcraft.com/catalog/gumpaste/beads.htm&h=198&w=213&sz=11&hl=en&start=5&tbnid=aJd_5VvAt_34TM:&tbnh=99&tbnw=106&prev=/images%3Fq%3Dsugarcraft%2Bsilicone%2Blace%2Bmolds%26svnum%3D10%26hl%3Den

it looks to me that the square patterns are fondant cut outs and the other looks like freehand royal icing piping.

if the layers are different sizes, for example, one tier is 2 inches high instead of 4, just 1/2 the servings (10 instead of 20) because they will need to be cut wider. if a cake is 3 inches instead of 4, then do 3/4 of the servings...(15 instead of 20). for the 4 inch cake do the normal 20. the person cutting will have to have a cutting chart made up or understand very well how to do it so the servings stay accurate and they dont run out of cake too soon.

Thanks Melysa! It probably would be best to just do those more complicated accents freehand! I think that I will just have to draw something up that I think I can do and then show it to her. I'll try to stay true to the original but still make it my own! icon_lol.gif Thank you everyone for your help! I will keep you posted... and post pics once I've made it! thumbs_up.gif

Dear Boring
May I ask why it is not legal to charge by the slice/serving in Australia? Just curious -

My advice or opinion may not account for much but again I suggest that you get the picture photocopied, trace the pieces you need to make in fondant and cut them out and use something to inprint on these pieces to make them look like lace. Not sure if you have the same thing in America or not but here you can buy plastic lace from a place similar to Michaels which you could also use as your template for those pieces.
